Using a messenger bag over a backpack?

I’m an incoming freshman and was just wondering whether most students use a messenger bag or a backpack. I got a leather satchel to use for school, and I just don’t want to be judged or anything lol. My parents just think people will be able to tell I’m an English major (which I am), but I wanted to know what y’all think. Thanks!

I think its college and you should do what YOU are comfortable with. This is the stage at which you need to stop worrying about what others think of you. Unlike high school, colleges admit globally and you will be surrounded by students with varying opinions and styles. BE YOU. Lest someone judge (and rest assured someone will find something about you to judge that’s for sure!!) cross them off your potential friends’ list. No one needs a friend who judges based on what you use to carry your books, how you wear your hair, your watch, your choice of major…

On a practical level, backpacks are better for weight distribution. My D toyed with using a tote bag and decided it would be better for her shoulders in the long run to use a backpack. But no, I don’t think anyone is going to laugh at you. It’s college, not middle school:-)

If you’ve got to carry around big heavy books and a computer, a backpack may distribute the weight better. Doesn’t matter either way.

The thing about college is that people don’t judge you like they did when you were younger. Everyone is so busy worrying about whether they’re doing the right thing or the wrong thing, they’re not worrying about what anyone else is doing… do what feels right for you!

Leather isn’t great in bad weather, it gets damaged.

Use whatever you feel comfortable with.

My D, a CS major, used this (with the camera insert removed) in undergrad:

Its size “small” is misleading. It’s large enough for a 3-ring binder, a 15" MacBook Pro, and a few notebooks.

Now that she replaced the MacBook Pro with an MS Surface, she is using the mini version of the bag.
