Using an easy book for college essays?

Will it be frowned upon if I use an easy book? I was planning on writing about “The Giver” but most people seem to read it in the 7th grade. I wanted to write about it because I felt I could talk about the themes and its meaning to me. Should I opt for a book that’s a higher reading level and more high school appropriate?

No, if that book has meaning to you then do it. It’s not like your 7th grade book is about an spaghetti alien invasion or something, it’s The Giver which is a great book!

The Giver is a very respected book. I don’t believe the admissions committee is likely to rule out anyone’s application solely on the basis of what book they chose to write about. It’s all about the content of your essay.

Hmm, I’m still debating but thanks for your input guys :)

I read a great essay about Dr. Seuss’ “Oh the Place You’ll Go!”

The Giver is certainly a more advanced reading level than Dr. Seuss. The essay is more about your response to the prompt than simply a book report about an impressive sounding tome.
