Using "Imaginary" props in vocal audition

Ok I wasn’t sure how to phrase it but I wanted to know if it was ok for me to act like I am reading a book during some part of my song. I obviously can’t have a real book and it’s only for like 1 minute of the song , I can also “hold” it up so I am not looking down but I just wanted to know if that is acceptable, because I am supposed to be reading a book so idk what to do without one if that makes sense. Thanks.

No one???

What kind of audition is this? Did they specifically say you couldn’t use a prop? How necessary is the book or imaginary book? If it is imaginary, how and where will you hold your hands? If it’s only a minute of a song, isn’t about a minute all you get for an audition? Is it a ballad or a comic piece. Is it like “Happily Ever After” from “Once Upon a Mattress” where Fred is reading from a book at the beginning of the song? Sorry, there are just more details needed before answering. Hopefully more will chime in to help! :)

^agree with supportive

Also, consider that while a book may be critical to the story line in the context of the show, in the context of your cut, miming a book may be confusing, unnecessary, even awkward or distracting.

Sorry for the lack of details, anw they have no mention on if you can use props and it’s for a conservatory 2 year program audition. Also in the song I am supposed to be reading from a book the lyrics go with it so they would not be lost which is why I wanted to know if it’s acceptable to act like I have a book since it’s kinda an important part of the song. Also I get about 2 minutes to sing I don’t have to “read” the book for a minute it’s less then that I should have worded that better sorry, and also I was thinking of “holding” the book up so they can see my face. Thanks again.

I don’t think there are any rules against it but it doesn’t sound like a great idea to me. Maybe, for a short “set the scene” kind of thing but they want to see you act the song. Standing there miming holding a book could look a little awkward and is not really acting is it?

Yeah it is part of the acting , lol that’s why I’m not sure about doing it cause I feel if I don’t then it will seem like I’m ignoring that part but if I do it might be doff putting. :/

In my laywoman’s opinion, in a vocal audition the less superfluous movement you do the more they are able to hear your voice and feel your acting. There are other chances in most auditions to see you move and/or do more physical acting. Can you cut the song in such a way that the book isn’t necessary?

That’s the best cut out f the song, I’m gonna think about it and see what else I can do, thanks again.

It would probably be easier to give more solid advice if we knew what song you were talking about.

Is it Adelaide’s Lament?

Funny, soozievt, when I read the OP all I could think was “The average unmarried female…”. Great minds think alike. ;-D

soozievt It’snot that, I rather not say which song, Silly I know but I don’t want to jinx it.

I’m glad it’s not Adelaide’s Lament. Much as I enjoy the show, I assume that song is massively overdone. ;-D

Haha yeah even on Youtube there are so many covers!
