Using obvious abbreviations in SOP?

I saw another poster ask a similar question, but I can’t find the thread anymore and I don’t think it answered my question.

Is it okay to use obvious abbreviations in a statement of purpose?

For example, if I am applying to a program abbreviated and called “ACES.” Can I simply use ACES in my SOP everytime (including the 1st time), or do I have to spell it out completely the first time and put “(ACES)” by the actual name? I really need to get within a word limit. I am pretty sure I have exhausted all my other options of reducing redundant words and I have come down to this.

I think the former should work since the people that will be reading this are from the ACES program.

Just write an SOP that makes sense. Abbreviations are ok. You don’t need to be super formal either. Just write a beautifully crafted SOP, that is clear and well organized, and don’t worry about trivialities. They won’t affect your chances.

Thanks, that’s good to hear.

Do you consider exceeding the MAX word limit by 10 words to be a trivial problem?
This seems like a trivial problem to me, but I have a feeling they might think I can’t read directions if I choose to exceed it.
