<p>I believe the answer is yes. my S is in 2010 after a year via AOG at NMMi. IT was a good year a good thing if you want WP.<br>
I am fairly certain that th nominaiton was a prerequisite but the AOG offer came from the WEst Point Admissions</p>

<p>My son went to Marion last year on an AOG scholarship and is at West Point this year. He did have a nomination prior to receiving his AOG Scholarship. My understanding is that the folks that receive an AOG Scholarship meet all of the requirements for admission to West Point (including a nomination), but for some reason the Admissions Office is unable to give them an appointment that year. I am aware of kids at Marion and NMMI that were fully qualified for West Point, but came from an overly competitive Congressional District or had medical issues that DoDMERB didn’t clear up until late in the process. You should also know that all AOG Scholarship recipients must get a new nomination in order to receive an appointment to West Point. The Admissions Office helps in the process by sending a letter to the appropriate Seantor and Congressperson expressing their confidence in the Candidate and his or her ability to contribute to West Point.</p>

<p>Just bear in mind folks that is not an absolute. Our son is a case in point. He was academically qualified and was not a recruited athlete. So there are other variables that admissions considers and only they know the mixture of ingredients. Ann’s comment is mostly correct, as the Prep School is to give another year of seasoning to individuals, but it can also be another way for the admissions department to offer a chance at West Point to certain individuals.</p>
<p>It can be looked at as a fifth year at West Point that does not cost a dime, and has no military obligation. I would suspect it might even seem more like it whenever they decide to move USMAPS up to West Point from FT Monmouth, similar to the Prep School being on the grounds of USAFA in Colorado Springs.</p>

<p>This is mostly correct also, but the “competition” part of the nomination process isn’t really a competition with other individuals. Everyone who graduates from USMAPS and is fully qualified will be admitted to West Point. They have nominations for the prepsters, it’s just a part of the interesting method of admissions.</p>
<p>Yes, the prep school is a wonderful opportunity for candidates.
It bears mentioning that one of the goals of the prep school is to assist USMA in meeting its class composition goals for leaders, recruited athletes, minorities, regular army soldiers, reserve component soldiers, and women.</p>

<p>As confusing as it seems, I guess rty456 and Frijoles are both correct. It is my understanding that a nomination is not required for USMAPs. While a nomination is not technically “required” for an AOG scholarship, in practice since most AOG scholarships are offered to candidates on the NWL who are fully qualified and have a nomination, a candidate without a nomination is seldom offered an AOG scholarship.</p>
