UT Austin and Indiana Business schools OOS full price [grandparent money offered only for UT or IU] or choosing cheaper options

Is anybody familiar with intensity at UT Austin business?

Seems like “cutthroat” would have more to do with whether there is competitive secondary admission to the major, or if the student has some other goal that requires a high GPA (e.g. pre-med, seeking jobs at “elite” employers), or if the student shares classes with others in such situations.

Why doesn’t the student reach out and talk to a student ambassador.

Higher rank doesn’t mean more or less intense.

Students need to ask questions and discover for themselves.

This is Honors -

We challenge students to think outside of the box and make connections in the process. In small classes of 40 to 45 students, you’ll focus on group discussions, presentations, and analytic exercises. We also provide programming so students from all graduating classes can form strong relationships with one another. Our program is more than an education—we’re a community.

That doesn’t mean that people are working against one another.

The same happens at work. Some get let go every year but good teamwork still happens.

Have not heard “cutthroat” to describe Kelley. Some of the business clubs can be competitive but to me those are different things.

These are obviously high achieving students based on their acceptances so I personally wouldn’t worry about that part of it.

Twin 1 seems to have it made since UT is their first choice, IF the grands can be dependable. I’d be tempted to get this more shored up if I were the parents. In a special account with some written/legal protections.

Is IU twin 2’s first choice? If yes, same protections as above. If not, I hate that for twin 2.

In the end, the parents and students need to decide if they want these grands having that much say and control. I’d be thinking long and hard about long term family dynamics. Thank goodness there are affordable options without the grands!

Affordable and EXCELLENT.

Kids are getting into niche jobs from UIUC Gees, UF Warrington etc.

What does this mean? If taking the money will cause problems between the twins I would NOT take the money. I could also support not taking the money no matter what for many of the reasons others have already stated. Personally I would be extremely unhappy with the grandparents and would let them know that, whether my parents or in-laws.

I also wouldn’t call Kelley cutthroat. But that’s subjective
one person’s ‘cutthroat’ is another’s ‘it’s competitive and I love to compete.’ The reality is it’s competitive at Kelley in many ways, and it’s large (~2500/class, as compared to Gies of 750)
so not a great fit for some students. IMO an example is introverted students.

This post is a good summary of Kelley plusses/minuses (my favorite ‘the smarmy always networking crowd’ because that is dead on): IU Kelley Petition Tracker 2025 - #400 by jefrobertson

This is just uninformed. Example, a potential accounting major will need 150 hours to sit for the CPA (and honestly, if one doesn’t want to do that don’t become an accounting major because many jobs (not all) that formerly took only accounting majors now take finance majors.) There are other reasons a finance/other business major might want to get a grad degree whether MBA, or masters in something like data analytics, MIS, AI, etc. The undergrad school has no bearing on whether or not one would need/want a grad degree.

For student 1, assuming no money from the grands, I wouldn’t hesitate to go UIUC Gies. It’s a small biz school with excellent outcomes in both finance or accounting. UIUC students are also happy. If this student ended up only majoring in accounting this would also be the best choice IMO.

For student 2, I might say UGA honors, but that still doesn’t seem affordable, in which case I would encourage FL honors. I hope they have visited these schools, for many reasons.

Lastly, you didn’t mention the gender of these twins. If either are female I would really hesitate to send them to Texas, FL, GA.

Too many moving parts. Dipping into a 401k for UT or Kelley seems like a bad option. Wharton or Stern I could understand. If their goal was elite level IB maybe, but it’s not.

Accounting takes 5 years and is doable from any decent school. Another is interested in Economics. Grad school mostly likely is on the table. What if they change majors?

With all their acceptances into honors programs these must be high achievement students. They’ll do well anywhere. I wouldn’t be too concerned about cutthroat environments. I don’t think these schools fall into that category.

Have they visited these schools? Which do they prefer?

We stayed in Lexington for a few days on a bourbon tour. Was pleasantly surprised.

I would also politely decline the grandparents offer. They might feel that they should have more input on future decisions.

The more I deal with elderly parents and in-laws the more I realize their logic and thought processing isn’t always sound as it once was.

If the 401K is all stocks, I would tell twins that gam and gamp’s money is not a guarantee, so counting their funds not really prudent.

Time to pick something parents/twins can pay for on their own.

What is wrong with a girl in TX, GA or FL?

Do we have any parent on this board with a kid in business school at UT Austin? Can we ping someone? If not current, maybe recent graduates?

I’m somewhat biased but I would strongly consider South Carolina with honors.

They have a strong honors program. They have one of the best international business programs which offers finance. It could be an interesting time for IB. Also not a bad place to spend 4 years.

S21 is at FSU. UF is a good school but he’s not a fan of Gainesville. It seems like a love it or hate it place. I would visit.

Can you please elaborate why not fan of UF? Any first hand experience from South Carolina?

Unfortunately twins and grandparents are a bit prestige hungry. Someone planted ideas of Public Ivies and success after those two top schools, so we need good arguments (apart from only money) to support any other schools from the list. Life stories are the best.

Lack of an access to certain types of healthcare, should they need it. I should have also said I might hesitate to send LGBTQ students to those states too.

If issues are only abortion or LGBTQ then they are not applicable.

No first hand experience with UF. Just my son’s comments after visiting Gainesville.

I did an MBA at South Carolina many years ago. Solid business school. They have a newer business school building. It’s pretty nice. Their honors program is also well regarded with nice perks.

I’m not a huge fan of rankings. Fit is way more important. But since you asked and it seems important to the family.

Seems that ranking is a very important part of fit for the students and grandparents here.
