UT Austin and Indiana Business schools OOS full price [grandparent money offered only for UT or IU] or choosing cheaper options

My random comments:
– If I were to consider the grandparent’s offer I would want them to insure the money will be available for four years and come to an understanding that they will no add new rules or contingencies (ex. student’s major, keepingna certain GPA etc.) or expect intrusive updates (ex. GPA) during the student’s college years.
–IMO The safer path is to attend a college the parents can afford. But if then twins know of the offer this may cause resentment if the grandparents top choice is also the students top choice. But be sure they understand the risks and know if their grandparents reneg on the deal for any reason that they will need to transfer.
–I see no issue with one twin taking the offer and the other twin declining to attend a preferred college. Both were given the same opportunity.
–I would not force or even encourage a student to take the offer if there is a preferred and affordable alternative.

From my understanding, UT Canfield gives students an advantage in job opportunities vs a non honors McCombs student.

If true, not only would UT offer a Top business program, but they would also potentially get a leg up on the other business students in career outcomes.

This is what Ive been told but I cant verify so you’ll have to do your own due diligence.

I don’t know if they’re interested in international business but the program is top notch. They started building it 50 years ago when a few people at the school realized where we going with international trade. The phrase oasis in the middle of the desert comes to mind.

I worked in graduate business admissions when I was there. The graduate school IB candidates were top notch. They were competitive with Harvard/Wharton MBA types. I can’t speculate on undergrad but I’m sure it’s a well run program.

The grands arent going to college…and this can’t be emphasized enough.

What would the family be doing if the grands had not made their strings attached offer? I’d go with that.

Totally agree!

Well, this was part of the reason to make this post. We were not able to find a source to validate it…

You mean USC. Correct?

Personally, I won’t take any money from my parents or in laws if it has any string attached to it. Why I let them influence my kids’ college choice with money?

For twin 1, UT is out of budget. If twin 1 really want to go to UT, they are taking the risk of getting the money from grand parents’ 401K with more string attached or any cash flow issue in the future. It is twin 1’s decision to make.

For twin 2, hard no! If twin 2 doesn’t even want to go Kelly, why bother to take the money from grandparents and go to a school they don’t like at the first place. Let twin 2 pick whatever school they like within budget.

If both twins worked hard enough and smart enough to get accepted by so many good schools with honors and merit. You should believe in their college choice as young adults. Good Luck.

Yes. South Carolina.

There’s not a college listed that won’t get the student a solid finance or accounting background.

IB too but obviously IU and UT are more connected but those are still low percentage of grad jobs.

It’s interesting to me the thought of assurance on outcomes given what you have experienced at Ga Tech engineering.

Frankly, outcomes are impacted by things far greater than a school name.

If one needs to graduate in business to keep the money flowing, then this is a train wreck waiting to happen.

First accounting class - I hate it - I want to study history or sociology instead.

Now what ?

You have great b schools that are affordable.

That’s the cleaner path - by far.

UT Canfield is more selective than Kelley Honors.

There are about 10k undergraduate Kelley business students and 25% are admitted to their business Honors program so that means there are about 2500 Kelley Honors students.

UT only has about 4700 undergraduate businesss students and Canfield only has 650 students.

650 vs 2500 students in their respective Honors business programs.

Also, UT is the #1 accounting program in the country for the last 20? years.

Exactly. If it were true, UT Austin/Canfield would be shouting it from the rooftops. With that said, I believe it would be a good experience and have good outcomes…maybe better than some of the schools on the list…but that’s super hard to get at. For example, for accounting majors I would not think the outcomes are different. For finance? Maybe.

But, needing to take money from the grands, which might not be guaranteed for four years and/or might come with even more strings attached complicates the situation and would give me pause (obviously others might feel differently.)

100% job placement* according to their website

There’s no way UT is going publicly say that you’ll be ahead of the line vs other students. You can easily read between the lines on their website.

Many people feel differently.

For fall 2025, UT received 90,562 applications. 48% increase from OOS

Not sure how selective as it has 650 kids but UT in general is far more selective than IU , which is highly ranked but not overly selective.

Every school listed is strong and many, including Florida, are highly respected in accounting.

Without getting too far off course, it goes beyond just abortion and LGBTQ issues. What about access to birth control? That is being restricted in some states.

It’s only about 120 per class.

Clearly the states are not an issue for OP, who already had a student at Ga Tech.

Just because these are issues for some, they are not for all.

Some people want to make it a narrative when many people dont consider it a defining issue.

College application statistics are pretty clear. Southern schools are thriving.
