UT Austin Chem E Focus?

Hey guys,

So obviously, UT Austin is in Texas, so I would imagine there is a lot of recruitment by the oil industry here. But does oil/petroleum really dominate ChemE’s focus at UT Austin? How about other fields like renewable energy? Do companies interested in renewable energy recruit at UT Austin?

Personally, I want research in alternative energy, and I feel pretty strongly about not entering the oil industry. I hear UT Austin has an amazing ChemE undergrad program which is why I am considering it. However, if it’s dominated by oil, I don’t think this program is right for me.

Thanks!

You can actually choose your technical option for ChemE at UT, and there is an environmental engineering option! I also strongly oppose the oil industry and am planning to have biomedical and business technical focuses (actually about to talk to my advisor in an hour or so). Here’s a bit on the technical options available: http://www.che.utexas.edu/wp-content/uploads/2010_12__2012_14__2014_16__Tech-Area-Electives2.pdf
