Yes, UT does outright deny instate students. Not everyone gets CAP.
It is a good program for those that really want to end up at UT Austin. Very disappointing to some and hard to accept with many having exceptional offers at other schools. But if UT is your dream school then it is a path for admission that otherwise would not be available.
@Longhornalum2 Did you really have to post 5 consecutive times to essentially trash UT because your daughter did not get in?
@Longhornalum2 sounds like you are still upset over her rejection. UT probably was looking for something your daughter didn’t offer.
@RileyM
Don’t know too much about Jester other than it’s the largest dorm on campus and yes, it is close to the library. My daughter spends a lot of time in the library (PCL) and never had an issue with the distance from Littlefield or did she ever feel unsafe. Littlefield is female only and much quieter than Jester,so making friends might be easier at Jester but there are some trade offs. I’m sure you will adjust to any dorm you end up in and make the most of it. My daughters first choice was Jester but she ending up being very comfortable at Littlefield and enjoyed the less “vibrant” atmosphere.
@powpow97 thank you! yeah I guess I will learn to adjust to any dorm. Also thank you to everyone here and their positive comments about UT. I really am looking forward to going. Seeing @Longhornalum2 comments threw me off a bit.
Forgot to update.
I got in three days ago (last Friday).
GPA: Weighted 4.0
SAT: 1460 (700+760. essay 7-6-7)
ECs: a lot of publications, leadership roles, very much involved.

Hope this helps!

@minimango @nkasper @awesomesaucee Thanks for your kind words of support.
@Lupescupe McCombs it’s actually ranked #5 for best undergraduate business schools, so it’s very good.
@Lupescupe Yes, it is an alternative and if your student wants to go Liberal Arts, it is a great way to get into the school. Everything has its advantages and disadvantages & both need to be weighed. Best of luck to you. http://www.dailytexanonline.com/2016/06/23/ut-arlington-cap-program-goes-awry http://www.dailytexanonline.com/life-and-arts/2012/01/23/students-experience-unique-perceptions-of-cap-program

@Longhornalum2 what was the alternative school ur daughter went to?
@bros20000 One thats “ranked higher on US News” didn’t you see it after she posted it 5 times? :)) (sarcasm btw)
As if “US News” is an accurate description/ranking of UT when it has multiple top 10 programs in engineering, science, business, and liberal arts and places UT lower due to factors like 4 year graduation rate that are skewed due to Texas’s 10% law
@Longhornalum2 Anytime! Thanks for your supportive words towards UT Austin
I’m a mom of two UT Austin students and am really impressed with the mature responses provided in response to postings of another mom, @Longhornalum2, in connection with the CAP program! You refrained from ad hominem attacks, stayed logical, pointed out the pros/cons of CAP, and were encouraging. My daughter has a friend who was CAPed and trying to figure out what to do. The information you provided will be helpful for him. Every student is different, there is no right or wrong decision, and no one should presume that their (or their child’s) path would be right for someone else.
Does anyone know the salaries and bonuses for investment banking in Houston as an analyst 1st year bc I read it’s like $150,000 for salary and bonus and McCombs places lights out for those jobs?
Thanks a lot @TexasExMom , the link was very useful.
Think @Longhornalum2 is referring to William and Mary (Tribe). Great small school in VA (I almost went there) and completely different than UT Austin. Just because you are an alumni of a school or greek organization, doesn’t mean your kid is a shoe-in. That goes for not only UT Austin but many colleges. My older one is thriving at UT and studying abroad and my youngest just got in. We are waiting for other decisions on April 1. I personally love the instate tuition rather than 60-70k a year. My oldest has made lifelong friendships at UT and has been ok with the large occasional general core class.
BTW, some of the UT colleges do look at the kids holistically. First you must meet a certain threshold with stats but then they delve deeper with ECs, LORS, etc. @Longhornalum2 feels that the ranking of W & M is superior to UT but doesn’t that depend on the major? For example, my dad at a Big 8 (long ago) NY accounting firm always looked at UT Austin accounting candidates. One of the best if not the best program in the US.
Personally, neither one of my daughters would have gone to UT if CAPed because of the risk of not getting their major. Just transferring internally is difficult at UT. One friend’s daughter did transfer from COLA to McCombs but she had to get a 4.0 her freshman year. Not an easy feat especially at UT. To CAP or not to CAP is a big decision but keep your options open.
I can tell you what I have experienced so far with one Longhorn - UT is filled with smart kids who are working their tails off. Many will get their first B or C in their lives. They will freak out, cry to you, and rejoice in a good grade. It is so very tough and some kids fail out. I’ve never seen my daughter work so hard in her life but she is happier now than she’s ever been. She’s having the time of her life.
Also, how well do McCombs students place in Houston IB?
Did anybody get accepted to UTSOA? Architecture or Design?
