UT Austin Nursing Program/ROTC

I would like to get into the School of Nursing while also participating in ROTC at Austin, however the branch I will be in is not fully decided yet, a part depending on which, if any, I get scholarships to. In addition there is a Nursing Rotc program for the Airforce/Army Branch, (navy does not offer Nursing at Austin), however they have told me the scholarship would only continue if I could get into the nursing program, if not it will be dropped and the money would have to be repaid. What I would like to know is the chances of me getting into the School of Nursing in addition to ROTC for each branch with these stats
GPA:4.33/5.0
SAT: 700 Math, 630 Reading, 570 Writing
ACT:28 Composite
Ranking: 7/349
AP Classes/Scores- AB Calc- 3 APUSH-3, APLIT-3 WHAP- 4 APLANG-5, currently taking AP chem and environmental
200+ Volunteer Hours
Freshman Class President, Sophomore Class Vice President, Senior Class Vice President, NHS member, HOSA member( State qualifier for Community Awareness), Skills USA member
Interned at Baylor Medical Center, will intern at CVS as a Pharm tech as well as test for a Pharmacy Technician Licenses

I do not know what your chances are. So cannot help you there.

According to their website, you can get directly admitted to the Nursing school at UT-Austin as a freshman. In other words, you might know before you even start. I recommend that you attempt to do this. If you do not get admitted to nursing as a freshman, then don’t go, unless you are prepared to pay back the scholarship money. <a href=“Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) | School of Nursing”>Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) | School of Nursing;

As a backup, you might also look at Texas Christian’s nursing program. You also enroll as a freshman, and they have Army ROTC. <a href=“Home - Harris College of Nursing & Health Sciences”>Home - Harris College of Nursing & Health Sciences;
<a href=“Army ROTC Program at TCU”>Army ROTC Program at TCU;

Same with University of Alabama-Birmingham (an excellent program too!)
http://www.uab.edu/armyrotc/welcome/scholarships/nursing</a></p>

For Navy NROTC nursing you might want to check out Belmont Univeristy in Nashville Tennessee. Also perhaps Jacksonville University in Florida. Kind of slim pickings in the South.

It looks like the Air Force does not offer scholarships until you are at least a sophomore. So you would have to pay for your freshman year anyhow. http://www.afrotc.com/careers/programs</a></p>

Austin what? UT Austin? What’s the chance that you will be admitted to UT?

The title of the thread specifies UT Austin.

The air force rotc does offer 4 year scholarships, and I think more specifically what are the chances of getting into major, School of Nursing, rather because being in the top 7% I already have automatic admission into UT Austin.

Is that a Nursing AFROTC 4-year scholarship? or a normal AFROTC 4-year scholarship?

If you are talking about a normal AFROTC scholarship, then I think you have very little chance of getting one. Most of those scholarships go to engineering majors and hard sciences like physics. Nursing is treated almost like a liberal arts major… see column labeled “All Other Majors” at this web page: http://www.afrotc.com/scholarships/schools</a>
Very few “other majors” get scholarships. The Air Force even likes foreign language better than “other.”

Also, even if you were able to get a normal AFROTC scholarship, there is no guarantee that you would be allowed to practice nursing in the Air Force. I know that sounds weird, but unless your scholarship specifies that you are on a nursing track, then they could have you do almost anything. The engineering majors are not likely to be doing engineering either. The Air Force just wants them to thoroughly understand technology.

Anyhow, make sure you understand the difference between getting a Nursing scholarship and getting a normal AFROTC scholarship.

Also, really, apply to UT-Austin as a direct admit to nursing. That is the only way to know for sure.

I say, go for it! But have back up plans. Apply for all three services, and apply to several colleges with nursing programs. It is absolutely deadly to focus only on UT-Austin.

Thanks again for you reply! I have looked into other branches of the military, and so far I have heard the best from people that have done either Navy or Air Force ROTC, however the nursing NROTC program was cut a few years back at Austin, and I’m trying to stay within Texas. I would not have to specifically be a nurse within any branch of the military but it is preferred. The thing with the Navy is they will not allow me to pursue a Nursing Degree if I go through their ROTC program, rather the Marines will should I choose that option instead.

In conclusion I really want to know if anyone has any experience getting into the Nursing program itself at UT Austin and what their stats were.

I made a mistake about TCU. I forgot that the Air Force rarely gives scholarships for private universities, or out of state schools. My mistake. Sorry.

So, look at all nursing programs at state universities in Texas which have AFROTC.

You better double check on this. To the best of my knowledge the Marines have no nurses. They get all of their medical care from the Navy. Maybe something has changed, but this would be big news.

Here is the Navy ROTC nursing program: http://www.nrotc.navy.mil/nurse.aspx</a></p>

However, no, the NROTC will not allow you to earn your Nursing degree at UT-Austin.

You might want to post this question in the U.Texas forum:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-texas-austin/</a></p>

Leave out anything about ROTC and just focus on the Nursing School. Ask about stats and direct admission.

Thanks again! I did just create a new post, regarding the Marine option, I know they don’t have a Nursing unit within the Marines, however they do not mind what major I focus on like the Navy. As a result, I can still get a Nursing degree while participating in the Marines ROTC, I just won’t be able to serve as part of the Nurse Corps

Okay, I see what you are saying. As long as you can live with not actually doing nursing in the military, then yes trying Marine Option seems like a good idea. In fact, if you get a Marine Option NROTC scholarship, after you have been in college for a year or so, you can request to switch to Navy. I knew a guy who did that. It happens.

The Marines put a lot more emphasis on physical fitness than any other service. I hope that you are a good runner and can do lots of pull ups.

@NROTCgrad I just wanted to bring an update to this thread, UTA, UNT, and TWU have offered campus based AFROTC scholarship if I go and would like me to reply by Friday. UT still hasn’t replied with whether or not I am accepted into the nursing program there so I am wondering if I accept the scholarship can I turn it down later should I receive my major or scholarships from UT later on?

Congratulations! =D>

Yes, you can turn down, or withdraw, from the scholarship program at any point prior to your sophomore year. At least that has been the case for a long time. However, the Air Force seems to be making changes so you should double check on that. Nonetheless, you definitely can turn down the scholarship prior to starting college.

@NROTCgrad 2nd update! Accepted into UT School of Nursing and offered AFROTC Type 7 that can be used at UT as well!

That is fantastic! :D/
