One of my friends, who is Asian and in the top 10% in his class, got accepted to UT Austin OOS and UMass Lowell. He also applied to like top ivies but got rejected. He decided to go to UMass Lowell because Austin is “too far away”. Is UT Austin a lot more prestigious than UMass Lowell, because I would think that distance would be a stupid reason to go to UMass Lowell than UT Austin

In short, yes.

UMass Lowell is not a bad school, but does not compare to UT Austin at all.

There are other issues, probably financial, that your friend is not sharing with you.

I’m sure your friend is well aware of the gulf between UT-Austin and UMass-Lowell. It is quite likely that he is hurting over the decision, so tread carefully.

UT Austin is more prestigious, but UMass Lowell isn’t bad either.

In the end, it’s his choice.
