I currently have 66 credit hours at Houston Community College and have been accepted to UT Dallas Erik Jonsson College of Engineering for Computer Engineering and Texas Tech University Whitacre College of Engineering for Computer Science.
My questions are:
UT Dallas Erik Jonsson College of Engineering is nationally ranked at #73 and Texas Tech Whitacre College of Engineering is nationally ranked at #92. and UTD national college overall rank is #140 and Tech is at #168.
So basically, academically, UTD is superior to Texas Tech. But as you may know, Texas Tech University is better known in Texas, larger school and UTD is fairly new school (i found out UTD is less than 50 years old, correct me if I am wrong). If you were me, which school would you choose and why?
I have really been thinking about which school I want to go and I just can’t decide which would be better for me.
I know both schools are good school, but would it be better to go to Texas Tech because they’re more known and there seems to be more interaction with students and faculty or should I go to UTD just because they are ranked higher in almost everything?
P.S. Tech is 8 hours away from where I live and UTD is only about 4 hours.
For computer science I recommend UT-Dallas over Tech and I am a huge Texas Tech booster (my son graduated from Tech in business administration). I live and work in the Dallas area and UTD has excellent connections for internships, etc. as I have seen a number of excellent UTD accounting majors as interns at my company. But you are computer science…My guess is that UTD has even better connections with employers around Dallas in computer science fields. For example, the world headquarters for Texas Instruments is only 5 miles or so from UTD and TI executives were instrumental in helping establish UTD because of the huge need by technical companies like TI for science and technical grads. There are literally hundreds of small and start-up technical companies as well as larger technical employers (such as Perot Systems now part of Dell) within 12 miles of UTD in huge office parks. And you can bet UTD has deep connections for internships and later full-time hires with many of these employers. I think so much of Texas Tech that I actually recruit for them at Plano high school college fairs. But for computer science and later employment, I think UTD has a considerable edge because of its proximity to so many employers close by.
Back when we lived in Dallas, my husband had a lot of CS students from UTD as interns and was impressed by them. They had a great internship program. They generally made job offers to their interns from UTD.
