UT Liberal Arts Honors and Art?

In trying to help my daughter decide about housing, etc., I need to ask a question. If one wanted the Libral Arts Honors Dorm and program would that be too hard as an Art major, sinking under a mountain of work? They don’t have an honors Art right? Another school recommends double majors but don’t know about UT.
Coming from a small school, the smaller classes would be great and she would like to room with a friend in the honors science program from home.

If your daughter wants to be in the Liberal Arts Honors program, she will have to double major in something in the Liberal Arts to my knowledge. I’d say taking an LAH course here or there would probably be manageable, but adding another major might be a lot for her. I would alternatively suggest Plan II, which doesn’t require you to choose a separate major in Liberal Arts, but rather is a major in itself (Your daughter would graduate with a BA in Plan II/BFA in Studio Art)–but it is probably higher in workload (required courses) than LAH. That being said, Engineers, Nat. Science majors, and Architecture students all are accepted into Plan II, so there’s no reason to believe that Studio Art would be out of the question.

However, bear in mind your daughter may be in the studio quite a bit as a Studio Art major for both classes and her projects. It’s certainly not impossible for her to graduate w/ LAH or Plan II. But it probably won’t be easy. If you/your daughter are open to a 5th year that might make the process easier.

As for dorm preference, the Honors dorms at UT are technically open to everyone, so your daughter wouldn’t have to be in Honors to live there. However, I think being in Honors raises the chances of living there–but there are no guarantees. Two friends of mine in the Dean’s Scholars Honors Program did not get their housing assignments there. I would suggest sending your deposit as soon as you apply as that will get you high on the list dorm preferences (but not guarantee) a spot there for your daughter.
