UT On-Campus Housing

Is there an on-campus housing having all or some features shown below?

• Furniture and Internet available
• It is best that a floor/cluster/residence hall is female only
• Less people share a bathroom and the room is near the bathroom
• Two-person share a room
• Convenient for buying things and going to laundry room and class
• It is best that students can stay at the dorm even during breaks and holidays. Or students only not allow to stay at the dorm during winter break
• Suitable for transfer student

What are the disadvantages of the suggested dorms?

Which dorm has the largest room?

All of the on campus dorms would be okay for a transfer student.

If you have not already applied for housing and you want housing ON CAMPUS for this fall (August 2010) and you are not a freshman, it may be difficult for you to get a room on campus. There are not a lot of spaces left and the housing department gives priority to freshmen. Email housing and ask them if they think you will get a room on campus. Texas has few on campus rooms compared to other large colleges. If UT housing does not assure you that you will get a dorm room, you will need a back up plan.

You might also want to investigate Taos coop, which is at the edge of campus, about as close to classes etc as Duren Dorm. Taos has openings for fall 2010, has a reasonable number of international students, and has more students who are not young freshmen. Most of the students who live on campus at Texas are young freshmen. http://www.collegehouses.coop/

You might also consider the private women’s dorms such as Scottish Rite Dorm or Hardin House. These are also about as close to classes etc as Duren Dorm. [Austin Private Dormitory Association](http://www.austindorms.com/)

Are you planning for future years, or do you need a place to live this fall, somewhere to move into August 2010?

• Furniture and Internet available
Yes

• It is best that a floor/cluster/residence hall is female only
Kinsolving is a nice female dorm that has a cafeteria and a little store in it.
Littlefield is a quieter female dorm right across the street.
[Be a Longhorn (All 14 Dorms)](http://bealonghorn.utexas.edu/freshmen/housing/choices/index.html)

• Less people share a bathroom and the room is near the bathroom
Some of the rooms in Kinsolving have four people sharing a bathroom. All of the dorms have rooms near the bathroom. The bathrooms shared by more than four people have private showers and are kept very clean.

• Two-person share a room
• Convenient for buying things and going to laundry room and class
All of the dorms at Texas are like this. There are on campus stores and CVS is right across the street.

• It is best that students can stay at the dorm even during breaks and holidays. Or students only not allow to stay at the dorm during winter break
You can stay on campus during winter break. Only one dorm is open so you might have to move into that one for winter break, but it is okay: you can stay, and international students often stay over winter break.

There have been a lot of past threads that compare the dorms to each others. If you search, you can find comments on the rooms and locations of the dorms.

From your past posts, it looks like you have been accepted to “Electrical and Computer Engineering” - University of Texas at Austin (Cockrell School of Engineering). That is a GREAT program, and Austin is a very nice city to live in.

Which dorm is open during winter break?

Last year, they used Jester East. See bottom of second page of this newsletter.
