Hi, I received an invitation from UT Southwestern (Division of Basic Science) couple weeks ago and was scheduled for an interview on Feb 5th. Then I received an invitation from Emory (Molecular and Systems Pharmacology) couple days ago, and they have only one recruiting weekend on Feb 5th. I contacted UTSW if there are other dates, and only date that I can visit is almost end of Feb. Considering that UTSW has rolling admissions, I think it’s better to visit earlier, but still I can’t just turn down the invitation form Emory. Because Emory has only one recruiting weekend, I may have better chance for an adimission to that school if I show up.

If you’d have to accept only one of two invites, which one would you accept? (I am interested in cancer biology research)

Take the end-of-February visit date by UT-Southwestern. Delaying your visit by a few weeks is not really going to jeopardize your admissions if you are an excellent candidate and they really want you. You definitely should not turn down either interview.

Which school is stronger in cancer biology research? I’m not in biology, so I don’t know. Which school has the people that you want to work with? That’s the most important factor to answer your question.

utsw is trying to separate interviewees into groups that share common interests. an early interview does not indicate you are necessarily a stronger applicant.

Thank you, guys. I decided to accept Emory’s invitation and delay UTSW interview. Hope I made the right decision. The coordinator from UTSW replied and said I won’t miss my opportunity because they only invite those whom they are truly interested in… yeah, i just had to trust myself thank you for advice!

also, UTSW accepts around 70-75% of individuals who interview (according to grad students there). as long as you act interested, converse intelligently, and avoid offending grad students + faculty, you should be fine.
