UT & TAMU essays

The prompt is:

There may be personal information that you want considered as part of your admissions application. Write an essay describing that information. You might include exceptional hardships, challenges, or opportunities that have shaped or impacted your abilities or academic credentials, personal responsibilities, exceptional achievements or talents, educational goals, or ways in which you might contribute to an institution committed to creating a diverse learning environment.

I want to write about moving from Cuba to Bolivia when I was seven and then to Texas, without knowing English, when I was seventeen. I had to adapt to a different culture and it was pretty tough for me. I have changed a lot since the day I arrived at Miami Intl. four years ago. Geez, I went from sneakers to cowboy boots.

Besides moving, I want to talk about how I have improved in school.
When I lived in Bolivia, I didn’t have any idea of what college was about. I made Cs in all my classes just to “get by” and thought I would get into any college…crazy me.

Back in Cuba, I cut my left wrist with a piece of glass (by accident) and lost the sense of touch in two of my fingers. The idea is that through the accident, I remember my life in Cuba and Bolivia.

Should I write about that?

Does this intro sound “dark” or bad?

The glass cuts the skin, my wrist bleeds and suddenly, I feel nothing. I am afraid. I run and run until I spot the school nurse. She disinfects the wound but the sense of touch does not return. I read the word “operation” in her lips and the fear grows stronger. Thirteen years later, when I look at the scar, my mind returns to Cuba and Bolivia.

Thanks!
