University of Texas at Austin is known as just “UT.” (not telling you to correct you, just to let you know for future reference).
You should chance yourself on the University of Texas forum here on CC and you’ll get more responses.
Not being in the top 7% could be a big barrier when you look at last years admissions stats. But dig through them and see and then watch the 2021 admissions unfold over the next few weeks and months. Your test scores look solid so that is good–definitely prep and take them again.
For UT, your class rank may work against you. Since you are Junior, try to improve class rank, test scores and submit all three really good essays. Good recommendation letters and part-time paid job also add additional value to your application.
For acceptance into UT, anytime an applicant is instate and out of the auto admit 7%, it is considered a reach. UT’s incoming student body is 90% auto admits and they are placed in majors first. Review applicants compete with the OOS students for spots and those OOS applicants are going to have very high credentials. Review applicants , however, do get accepted and you will never know if you are one of those review applicants who will be selected unless you apply, but also do have some safety schools, UTD is an excellent school as is UT Arlington.
Yeah it’s 90% (75 Top7 and 15 not) Texans. Either way, its a huge number.
The top 20% will kill you. They actually don’t look at GPA at all, just class rank. That’s how important it is to them.
By not making it in the top 7, that leaves a 15% gap for you. Of course, with a 1460 and 10 APs, you aren’t the typical non-top7 applicant.
Perfect the essays, maybe try again on the SAT senior year (my ACT went up 5 points in my math section because I hadn’t taken trig yet), and stay positive.
UT is not a safety, but you have a decent shot. Have you thought of A&M?
Thanks I have taken Stats this year and will take Calculus BC I am a bright student and did well sophomore and am doing well junior year, however, freshman year killed me. I took the ACT and am waiting for scores. Is UT’s pre-medical program an extremely difficult program to get into? I am an Eagle Scout as well will that stand out at all?? Thanks.
You are good for UTD and UTA but ranking may kill chances for UT Austin as our stupid state doesn’t care if you are a gem or a dud as long as you are in top 10% for automated admission. I only know of IB diploma holders with good SAT/ACT, who make it into Austin without rank or hook.
You have a good ACT score but your rank is going to kill you. I suspect you would be offered the CAP program if you apply to UT. A CAP student goes to a UT system school for a year (UTA, UTSA, UT Tyler) and you must maintain a certain GPA in a approved list of classes. Maintain that gpa and you will be admitted to the university. You are not promised your chosen major when your admitted. Click on the “Colleges and University” tab in the left hand margin of this page and follow it to the University of Texas forum. They can give you more specific answers to your questions. Goodluck to you. You really do have some great scores.
You should be top 10 or close to 10% to improve your chances as in-state review admit at UT. Take ACT again for 34+. Keep in mind being a non auto admit, you are competing for 15% of total seats.
