UV cleaners for phones/car keys, etc.

Ds has an upcoming birthday. He’s extremely hard to buy for in the best of times. While I don’t necessarily want to go with a Covid-themed birthday (how depressing!), I was thinking I might get one of those devices that use UV rays to clean your phone and items that are bacteria/virus prone.

I’ve looked at bit, but it’s all pretty confusing to me. Some seem to indicate you have to remove the phone from its protective case??? Is this to get the phone to fit? I’ve also read that in order to be effective you have to wipe down the phone first. Well, gosh, seems like doing that frequently enough would nullify the need for a UV device. It needs to be something that is easy to use. I saw one that kind of looked like a vase. Lol.

His phone is old enough that it doesn’t have wireless charging, and some of them seem to do double duty of cleaning and charging. I’m sure he will eventually get a phone that offers that feature, so I am not opposed to that at all.

I just thought it might be useful, but I don’t want to waste money on something that is basically ineffective or too burdensome to use.

TIA for any insights!

If the phone has good water resistance, just wash it with soap to remove any SARS-CoV-2 (and whatever else) that may be on it.

A UV device is effective in killing viruses, bacteria, dust mites, etc. A UV-C wand could be used to clean face masks for reuse, for example. However, if you use it on phones or other delicate electronics, make sure they’re turned off first.

I just put a small dollop of hand sanitizer and wipe my phone, hands and whatever else I touched. I am trying to keep from accumulating more “stuff.” The UV cleaner for electric toothbrush broke without much usage, so I think some don’t last long.

I keep napkins in the car and find I’m putting hand sanitizer on them and wiping down things I’ve touched after doing something like my wallet, CC, phone (if touched) and handle of my purse.

Okay, thanks all. This sounds like it is an unnecessary gadget.

I ordered a wand one for our phones and to keep in the car- thing was SO flimsy. I also realized I had no functional way to know if it worked or if it was a scam… I can’t tell if it’s an actual UV light by looking at it. It went back in less than a day. I stick with sanitizer now.

Seems like a waste of money to me. Retired physician here. At home I don’t go crazy cleaning things. Remember- the cleaning only lasts until the next touch anyway. The best thing to do is to wear a mask to avoid spreading your germs to others and not touch your face when out. Cleaning your hands, stuff and counter when you return.
