UVA Chances

Please Chance Me Really Quickly?
Junior from Northern Virginia, UVA accepts so many from our area that there is a cap on how many they can accept.
I have a 1970 SAT.
4.20 W, 3.82 UW
In - State
Lots of Extracurriculars, MHS Board Member, Class Board, Varsity Swim
Loads of Volunteer Service
Looking to go into Economics/Finance
I heard that “supposedly” the acceptance rate for UVA In-State is 40%; I was wondering if I will be accepted.

Oh and I have a very rigorous class load. Multivariable Calculus with many AP’s.

I go to South County High School if that changes anything by the way.

Not “supposedly”: IS admission was 41.5% this cycle. http://uvaapplication.blogspot.com/2015/03/unofficial-uva19-admission-statistics.html

Your SAT is at the 25% level, but the much more important factor is what your transcript shows. They love good grades in tough courses. They also take your class standing very seriously. If you are a Virginia resident in the top 10% of your class, with at least normal range ECs and no major discipline or legal problems, I’d say your chances are excellent.

I have posted the analysis before - there is no limit or quota on NoVa admissions when you look closely at the totals. NoVa students are far more likely to apply to UVA, and they do so from much lower rank in class. NoVa applicants are still offered admission disproportionately more than applicants of similar class rank from other areas.

(I think maybe they should cap NoVa admissions to keep them from overwhelming the school - it’s supposed to be for the entire state! - but they do not. Any disparity, more than normal year to year fluctuation, seems to be fully explained by class rank.)

Is my GPA fine? For UVA, my schools database recommends a 4.29.

Imagine you have no GPA at all (every school can determine their own weighting system anyway). Look closely at your transcript - what courses did you take? How hard was each one? What grade did you get in each one? Are the grades supported by any standardized test scores such as AP, IB, or SAT-II subject tests? Were there more challenging courses offered that you could have taken? Do your grades show interest, aptitude, or problems in any particular area?

After all that, they’ll look at ECs and essays and such to see if you’re “well rounded.” But the first thing is to make sure you’re prepared and ready for the college level academics, as much as possible.

If selecting applicants for admission were as simple as looking at GPA and SAT results, you could just program a calculator to do the job and lay off the committee. They’re making decisions about people, not numbers.
