My son is a student at top magnet school known for its rigor. GPA at 4.3 likely after first sem. Applied for RD considering chances with GPA. SAT 1580. Good ECs like research, service. NMSF.
For UVA he applied for RD to the main campus Arts and Science college into Neuro major.
Would it have been wiser to apply to any other general college or general major to increase chances of acceptance? He is ok with any as he is looking for a pre med path in future.
How about UVA Wise?
Also the portal or common app does not seem to allow more than teacher recommendations. Is there any way to send a recommendation from any volunteering mentors or directors?
Any suggestions to help with the admission will greatly help. Thank you.
Are you saying he waited to apply RD so he could show good grades in S1 of senior year?
His HS counselor at the top magnet program should be able to help with all of this…were they involved in the process? What do Scoir/Naviance scattergrams show, assuming his school uses one of those programs?
UVA doesn’t really want LoRs from people outside the classroom setting…how many teacher recs has he sent?
UVA does not admit into majors in the College. So major choice won’t matter in the admissions decision for your son; if he’s admitted, it will be as undecided to the College of Arts and Sciences.
Uva Wise is nothing like UVA. You’re better off attending one of the many, topnotch to solid, VA publics.
Thank you for the response. His school has usually been a tough choice when it comes to UVA for whatever reasons.
He submitted 2 teacher recommendations allowed max on common app, however there are some outside mentor recommendations that could add value and wondering how it can be done for UVA as any option. Appreciate any insight.
You still want to send this even though UVA discourages it? I would have your kid ask their high school counselor what they think.
They don’t want them. Dean J (an admissions officer at UVA who does a lot of social media engagement) has made clear that the volume of applications is such that they do not want any more materials than they request.
I think you can be very confident your son has done everything possible to be a strong candidate for UVA. Arts & Sciences is typically the right choice for people on pre-health tracks outside of nursing, as that is where the typical prereq courses will be found and at least most people tend to end up choosing an overlapping major. He has strong academic credentials, and good ECs, and has submitted all the required application materials.
So, that’s it! Now you have to wait for a decision, but it doesn’t seem to me like there is anything more to do.
