UVA drops supplemental essay for most first-year applicants

Recently, UVA announced is it going supplemental essay-free for all first-year applicants. Only those applying to the School of Nursing will have to submit any writing beyond the Common App.

Is this a move to further increase applications or simply a measure to make the application process easier for admissions officers? Or is the school succumbing to the political pressure to terminate all DEI programs? What do you think?

Current applicants, how do you feel about this development?

Or maybe they got sick of reading essays written by ChatGPT and decided the traditional supplemental essay is no longer a good way to evaluate most applicants?

We noticed that Pitt also eliminated its honors essay this year… I wonder if there are other schools eliminating or cutting back on essays.

So far we have found it odd that our DS’s safety school - one with over 80% acceptance is one of the ones that has an optional essay (which to me is still a requirement - if they offer you should accept to do it!) versus the other schools on his list that are between 30-60% acceptance rate.

Hi there, just a heads up that the School of Nursing at UVA still has a supplemental essay, so the “all first-year” students part isn’t correct.
