Asian kids attend a northeast prep school on full fin aid and has received a $175,000 scholarship for high school for four years. He has all necessary SATS and SAT IIs and APs and other extracurricular activities.

If he receives a fin aid for one week summer program, he may be in UVA for one week.

He is thinking to apply. The college rep talked to him about the Jefferson scholar program at the college fair. They end up talking for long time. What this scholarship covers? Does the college offer need based aid also?

Since financial aid is very important consideration to us, so we want to know about the endowment for the school. Also how is the History/economics/political scince/International relation departments. Thanks for your help.

Thanks

Umm. UVA’s endowment stands at approximately $3.4 billion. Financial aid is very good. The departments you listed are also fairly good.

"how is the History/economics/political scince/International relation departments. "

excellent, all of them.

Actually, that $3.4 billion that’s highlighted in various endowment lists is deceiving. UVa actually has more money than that. Each of UVA’s schools and scholarships have their own foundations, which may not be included in the $3.4 billion. For example, the Law School’s endowment of over $200 million and the Jefferson Scholars nest-egg of over $100 million are not included in that $3.4 billion figure.

Collegein07,

I was running to work, so I wasn’t able to include this other info. You mentioned that you wanted to know more about financial aid. Well, here are some links to UVA’s financial aid program, Access UVA. If your family income is less than $37,500 for a family of 4, you will be eligible for a full-ride at UVa. If your income is higher than that, the amount of financial aid you will get will depend on your FAFSA score. Supposedly, your need-based loans won’t exceed more than 1 year’s in-state cost, (which is around $15K) for all 4 years.

You also showed interest in the Jefferson Scholars Program. In a nutshell, Jeff Scholars covers the full cost of attending UVa plus several academic enrichment activities and leadership seminars for all 4 years at UVa, along w/ summer travel opportunities w/ fellow Jeff Scholars the summer between your 3rd & 4th years. If your school falls within one of the “scholarship regions”, your school will have to nominate you. Each school can only nominate 1 graduating senior. If you’re outside of the regions (including international students), no worries - you are still eligible. The Admissions Office picks out outstanding applicants from outside the nominating regions and suggests them to the Jeff Scholars program which is run by the UVa Alumni Association.
