UVA: Midwest Students Need Not Apply

If you’re from the Midwest and have anything less than a perfect GPA or test score, you’re wasting you money applying to University of Virginia. They’ll have plenty of excuses for why you weren’t accepted but the facts (statistics) speak for themselves.

Really? Do tell . . . what excuses did they give you?

I’m fascinated . . . I’ve never heard of a major university taking the time to explain an adverse admissions decision.

Perhaps the OP has forgotten that U VA is a state school, and that its primary undergraduate mission is to educate Virginians. I would venture to guess that the University of Michigan holds OOS students to a higher standard also.

29% are OOS, and it’s an important funding source for UVA.

It really has nothing to do with the Midwest, it’s about how competitive it is for any OOS student to get one of the OOS slots. For a flagship public University, UVA is very popular (as is University of Michigan, 37% OOS) with OOS students.

[UVa Enrollment by State](http://avillage.web.virginia.edu/iaas/instreports/studat/dd/enrl_state.htm)

Well, I’ve looked at the numbers Dean J provided, and it seems apparent that there’s a bias against students from the Dakotas (and Wyoming) . . . or, maybe, (just guessing) is it perhaps possible that there just aren’t a lot of applicants from those states? ;)

There sure are a lot of kids from Ohio, considering they discriminate against Midwesterners. Do they all have perfect stats?

^^ The Dakotas have some very good in-state colleges which are relatively inexpensive, even for OOS students. They (and Wyoming) are also among the smallest states for HS student size. It would be interesting to do an analysis comparing UVA student numbers, cost of college by state, and state census numbers.

I have to say it was great fun seeing a baseless rant slapped down with a big pile o’ facts. Thanks you Dean J!

Illinois, 5th state by population: 162
Pennsylvania, 6th, 491
Ohio, 7th: 178
Georgia: 8th: 339
Michigan, 9th: 70
North Carolina, 10th: 295
New Jersey, 11th: 446
Maryland, 19th: 650
Connecticut, 29th: 236

East coast bias?

Since UVA is in the eastern part of the country, it’s hardly surprising that more of its students would come from the east. I think it’s a school that’s on the radar for easterners far more than it is for midwesterners, for whom UMich would be the bigger magnet. I guess it would be revealing to see the same type of statistics for students from the east coast attending UMich.

Nice deflection but wouldn’t it be a little more to the point to compare applications received to application admitted? By the way, are you related to Dean J?

With all those facts (statistics), you can show us the comparison.

keygrip: nice deflection deflection. But even if the admit rates are low, how do you explain that 29% of admits were OOS US applicants? Even if UVA admitted twice or even three times the rate of in-state residents, I surely can’t complain. VA residents DESERVE the better admit rate – they subsidize it. Go to your own in-state flagship and stop acting entitled.

Dude, really? You went through the trouble of starting a new CC user ID just to rant against UVA? Pfft…

It is a state school, its job is to education students in its state, not your state.

Thank you barrk123, my point exactly!

I don’t know about that.
