<p>I think that both UVA and UPENN will set you up pretty well to get into any of the top law schools. I applied to the College at Penn, and am still waiting.</p>

<p>UVa is over-rated. Tuition is being increased by 50%, 10% a year, over the next 5 years. Major sports programs are sinking to all time lows. BBall team didn’t even make the NIT. With MIA and Florida St. now in the ACC, don’t expect the Cavs football to break into the top 10 again.</p>
<p>Charlottesville is boring. Top 10 city? HAH, there isn’t even a real club here. The music scene is really poor. Every top band plays either Virginia Beach, Richmond, or Wash DC… and just passes over C’ville.</p>
<p>There is an air of racism in C’ville due to the city’s history of slavery that C’ville will never get past. If you examine the “diversity” at the university you’ll see how this has an impact. UVa laggs when it comes to admitting black males. UVa facuty also laggs when vetted for their diversity.</p>
<p>The downtown mall is an over-priced relic for the grunge/burnout crowd.</p>
<p>Penn is more known, however, if you live in Va, I would say go to UVA. At UVA you can focus on your academics while saving a lot of cash for LS.</p>
<p>I think spyderman was a bit harsh on UVA. Have any Ivy schools ever won a Basketball championship? I am not sure about them having great football programs either. Is UPenn cheaper than UVA? UVA is definitely one of the more diverse campuses in the country. C’ville in generall has a substantial african american community, so I would not say that the town is racist. As far as music and shops go… well if that is what you are after you should really look for a school in NYC or on the West Coast.</p>

<p>well if you’re a Virginia resident you get more for what you pay…now…6K vs. 40-50K?..hmmmm :)…not to mention UVa’s law school is right up there with Penn…and you have to think of circumstance…it’s a public school so it shows a heavier reliance on grants, so it’s funds are limited. I’m sure if UVa went private and started charging a similar tuition to all entering students, it could move to the top of the ranking ladder as well. Charlottesville is a nice city…low crime, nice ppl…and ummm…sorry to tell you but the entire U.S. had a history of slavery :)…it’s in Virginia for God’s sake…and Pennsylvania had a substantial number of slaves for the north…not nearly as many as Va., but then again, agriculture wasn’t as big in the north as it was in the south. And there are racist ppl everywhere…infact I’ve met a number of racists from New York that are far more open about their hatred than those in the South…but there is no “racist atmosphere.”…36% of the student population is minority…you’re trying to compare an apple to a carrot…Philly vs. C-ville…i mean REALLY…there’s OBVIOUSLY going to be a difference! Take the population statistics…ofcourse there’s going to be more to do in Philly…but on the basic “living conditions,” crime, pollution, water quality, traffic, etc…C-villes alot better than Philly…but you’d kind of expect that…the more condensed a population the more disorder.</p>
<p>For sports…Virginia footballs moving up :)…they’ve been pickin up some strong recruits!..still shouldn’ta dropped Bradshaw last year…he coulda helped them substantially…look how Ahmad’s doin at Marshall! He’s on his way to becoming their number one running back, and moving on to the pros after his junior year…that’s just a prediction though…:).</p>
<p>Now UVA’s bball team isn’t too hott…but neither is Penn’s…i bet if you put them up against eachother Virginia would have the upper hand…UVa has one of the top LaCross teams in the nation…:)</p>

<p>Yeah in state it would be a close call, if money is a real issue I would go UVA. Both will get you to the same place in the end and are top schools.</p>
<p>Thanks for the help everyone. I am instate and tuition will be a problem if I have to pay more than $10,000 a year. I know that UPenn is approx $31 a year, but I’m hoping to receive several grants/scholarships. Vandy for instance offered me $25k/yr in grants and $5k loans.</p>

<p>Racism flows both ways. UVa has issues that need to be addressed. </p>
<p>How about UVa Law only admitting 20 African Americans a year? That’s only 6% of the 1st year class. It’s off 50% from 40 students a year, and they are having major issues.</p>

<p>the problem of black females outnumbering black males in higher education is nationwide. you cannot blame uva for it, it is a problem of a society/community/other factors in general </p>

I am sure that if the student has the credentials on getting into uva and is a minority the adcom will not send him a rejection letter. i speak of that as you might say from experience. anyhow this is not what this thread was about</p>
<p>Neboola, nor will you see it in my post. It’s not my claim, but diversity is an ongoing systemic issue at the University. </p>
<p>There is a difference between the city and the university. I also happen to be from NY. Someone earlier said racism is everywhere, which is true, but it’s quite different in the south. Virginia is still dealing with unresolved slavery issues.</p>
<p>BtW, I don’t see too many top 50 schools in the list you provide.</p>
