Hi there! So UVA is my dream school, but I’m an out of state student, so my chances of getting in are less than other students who are in state. I’m really worried I won’t get in, can you help me?
My SAT Score: 1690
Math: 470
Critical Reading: 620
Writing: 600
GPA: 4.4
Extracurriculars: Class of 2016 President (3 years)/Vice President (1 year), Varsity Swim Team (3 years), Varsity Swim Team Manager (1 year), Backstage Theatre crew (1 year), lector and accolite at two churches, volunteer at local rescue squad, NHS parliamentarian, Volunteer at animal shelter, and SGA member.
Thanks for helping me!
I’ve been working everyday on that and I’m seeing improvement! Thanks for the advice!
I would definitely try to get your SAT math score up as much as possible. I’d say to strive for at least a 600 in math. The middle 50% have SAT scores between 1820 and 2180. If you get in this range, your chances will be a lot higher. Your ECs look good. I’m thinking that your 4.4 GPA is weighted? Or is your unweighted GPA on a 5-point scale? I would also make sure that your essay is great, as well as your letters of recommendation. What does your senior course load look like? Are you taking the most rigorous classes at your high school?
Our school has a very weird GPA scale. My 4.4 is my current (as of the end of my junior year) and my cumulative is a 4.1. Again, our school is odd. My courses this year include AP English 12 and AP Bio. I’m not taking the most rigorous math, but I may switch that class at some point. I’m also taking a second year of German, a third year of Theatre, and an AP study period. I have many wonderful letters of recommendation and have already begun to prepare my essay.
Here’s the Common Data Set for 2014:

Pay attention to the stats in section C. You should probably take the SAT again. Don’t forget to have a safety you can afford and would be happy to attend. Only about 30% of a class can be from out of state. Good luck!
@ShayMcD2016 Oh okay. Then I don’t think you have too much to worry about. As long as you get your SAT score up, I definitely think you’ll get in! Good luck!
Thanks for your advice! I’m practicing every day for it!
