Uva, unc-ch, wm

I’m about to make some decisions about colleges in general, can y’all give me some insight on which is best college for what my plans are, i want to be doctor and business person. I want to get a MD/MBA (5 year program). I want to attend a college that i can earn a REALLY good GPA but also have fun- you know the perfect college. I love UVA, UNC-CH, WM, out of these colleges I will major in only Business administration and take pre-requisites for medical school. So, like i orginally asked which is the best college for me, remember that i want to get good grades also, wm i heard is hard. Thanks for your help

Any of the three would get you where you want to go. Since you’re in NC, it makes very little sense to pay OOS tuition at UVA or William & Mary when UNC Chapel Hill is just as good and considerably cheaper.

those are all tough schools, earning a high gpa won’t come without a lot of effort and work first.

bump,

If money isn’t much of a problem for your family, UVa would be the best choice. Otherwise, choose UNC. Just a personal opinion.

UVA is my opinion is the best place to be if you are really serious about receiving an education and have a decent time on the way. UVA is my fav. of the bunch.

Just curious. If your plan is to major in business in undergrad, why would you want to pursue a MD/MBA instead of just a MD. What would you hope to gain with your MBA (w/o working experience) that you don’t already learn in your BBA?

“I want to get a MD/MBA (5 year program).”

I’m not sure what this means. An undergrad degree is four years, a medical degree is four years, and an MBA is usually three. Separately, that’d be an 11-year program. Even joint undergrad-professional school programs typically just shave off a year. Are there med schools which offer combined MD and MBA degrees in five years beyond the baccalaureate degree? If so, I’ve never heard of them.

Harvard offers a joint MD/MBA which is structured to be completed in 5 calendar years. What I don’t understand is why would you want to pursue a BBA before that.

[MD/MBA Joint Degree - MBA - Harvard Business School](MD/MBA Harvard Medical School - MBA - Harvard Business School)

If you are in-state, go to UNC. Easily the best value of the three; its a great academic school where people have tons of fun as well.

W&M is the most intellectual of the three and more of an undergrad focus. Flip a coin between UVirginia and UNorth Carolina, But W&M is more like Davidson or Brown than the other large research state U’s. Of course, the sports and party scene are much bigger as one might expect at Chapel Hill or C’ville.

It just depends on what makes you tick, but do realize the differences in the schools.

The OP is interested in majoring in business and getting a high GPA.

Thanks for all the help so far!
gadad- I want to get into a school after my undergrad that offers the MD/MBA program - they are only 50 colleges in this country which offer this- here is the list [Curriculum Directories](http://services.aamc.org/currdir/section3/degree2.cfm?data=yes&program=mdmba)

GoBlue81 I want to purse a MBA because from the statistics i’ve seen the people who have a MBA always get paid more plus they are more succesful, but your point does make sense.

In the MD/MBA program the expirence needed for MBA is all built in during the 5 years working over the summer etc.

An article in today’s Raleigh News & Observer indicates that UNC-CH is not all that hard, and that grade inflation is prevalent with more A’s being given than B’s.

[UNC-CH grades still ballooning - Higher Education - News & Observer](http://www.newsobserver.com/1366/story/1381084.html)

…not that it helps a pre-med much. The average GPA for each department:

Biology: 2.336
Chemistry: 2.668
Physics: 2.863
Math: 2.515

You mentioned how hard WM is…keep in mind, med school is MUCH, MUCHHHHH harder. While an easier program might make it easier to get the grades you’ll need for admission to med school, it wouldn’t be the best way to prepare for the ultra heavy and extremely difficult workload of a first-year med student.

^good point, but the toughest battle for becoming a doctor is admission to a MedSchool then the rest will take care of itself, many MedSchools will go out of the limb to help you during MedSchool so you can graduate. BUT can you please respond to the OP, many people are asking questions instead of answering the OP

OOS UVA: $40,473
OOS W&M: $39,600

In-state UNC: $16,370

The answer is obvious. UNC can match anything UVA or W&M have to offer – and for less than half the price.

^UNC is good school and a very good value, but it cannot recreate the atmosphere and relationships that occur at W&M. There are literally thousands of kids at UNC that couldnt get into W&M. It doesnt make UNC bad, its just different. If the OP wants a smaller environment with an undergrad focus, thats not UNC. W&M isnt for everyone, neither is UNC or UVa. But the answer to happiness and success doesnt lie in tuition costs alone.

If cheaper were better, we would all live in mobile homes and drive Yugos to community college.

Considering that the vast majority of UNC students are from North Carolina and hence OOS applicants, I don’t doubt it.

Cut Carolina students and they bleed blue. You’d be hard pressed to find students who aren’t bubbling with love for their school. After all, there’s a reason Chapel Hill has the nickname “Southern part of heaven.”

Yes, but the OP simply asked for a college where he could earn a decent GPA and have fun. Obviously any of the three could meet those criteria. Why not go for the cheap one?
