I have narrowed down my choices to these three schools. I am looking to major in Historic Preservation. I am from China. From my point of view, UVA is ranked a bit higher in terms of academics, but Historic Preservation in UT Austin or USC would be better thant that in UVA. USC and UVA are beautiful and more convient than UT Austin.
I have no idea about what I will be able to do after graduation because of little information in this aspect I can get while I am now in China. What do you guys think…? Could you offer me some suggestions about the advantages or disadvantages of these three schools?

I might be biased because I’ll be headed to USC next year, but USC’s got the largest international community for uni’s so there’ll be plenty of other internationals. I don’t know much about the master’s program, but USC’s been rising up those rankings after becoming much more selective about their admissions.

While historic preservation is on the upswing in the US, it’s too narrow a specialty that would be useful in many areas of the country. Many locations have none, or little historic preservation projects to speak of. Large cities may be your best bet. As for its use in China, I have no idea.

Do you plan on returning to practice in china?

Thank you for all your replies.

I would prefer to stay in the U.S. first after my graduation.

Actually, I want to return and contribute to the preservation in China. There are so many heritages now in danger and requiring to be noticed, researched and conserved. However, sometimes, it is difficult to put the efforts into practice in China, because of some social and political reasons. I suppose that I may firstly stay in the U.S., researching on the topics I am interested in Historic Preservation. I think it will prepare me better in this field.

And, there is another question. The historic preservation program in UVA is together with a Urban and Environmental Planning program. What do you think about this program?

Among the 3, UT at Austin is ranked highest for Historic Preservation – Austin is a great town for a young person. You want to receive your BS in Historic Preservation or just a certificate?
What area do you wish to specialize in…conservation lab is important if you’re interested in materials conservation, etc.
