UVa vs Northwestern

Hahaha, personally I find Eurofootball’s last post very funny. I love his sarcastic tone.

Racism in UVa has been debated quite a few times here in CC. A lot of UVa people admit that racism is ‘prevalent.’ I think the existence of racism is a limitation of UVa as a public school - Virginia has to admit at least 70% of instate students, and some of them are ‘rich-white-preppy-ignorant.’

Let’s make a point clear right now. In UVa, NOBODY will openly discriminate a minority group and promote racism. UVa hopes to create as diverse student body (in terms of race) as possible.

However there is no way UVa can argue that UVa is VERY tolerant towards other races or cultures (certainly not to extent its peers -Berkeley, UCLA or Michigan - tolerate). Racism in UVa is greater than its peer public schools, and I’m very certain that this concern towards discrimination made some of minority students decline an offer to UVa.

When international/minority students consider colleges among Michigan, UCLA and Berkeley (3 of the top 4 public universities) they think about the universities’ prestige, academic environment, student faculty ratio etc etc. When UVa competes with these, racism & discrimination becomes a factor of consideration along with other factors listed above. This was also a case for me, as I’m asian-american.

So my point is, UVa still has a tag of being a school with discrimination. Yes, in part because Charlottesville itself is, to some extent, filled with stereotypes.
