<p>FWIW, I think you’re both right. No way is racism remotely endemic at UVA–the place is far too intelligent and enlightened for that. But, the place is definitely tradition-bound (usually in very appealing ways) and unfortunately some of those traditions, historically, were exclusive. It’s never going to be a Berkeley or UCLA in this regard and I think that’s fine. I never considered myself much of a prep type, and found them generally amusing. They’re just a contingent, they don’t rule the place.</p>
