I’m having a hard time deciding between the two… I plan to major in biology, but my ultimate goal is to get into a good med school. I live in Illinois so it would cost less to go to UIUC then UVA, but UVA is a better school for pre-med. Do you think it is worth the money for me to attend UVA instead of UIUC?

Why is UVa a better school for pre-med? Do they have a better pre-med program? Easier to get higher grades in science courses? or what? It is certainly not because UVa has stronger science departments.

Personally I would pick Illionois for the money. Medical school can be very expensive.

Illinois! UVA is a good school and all but so is UIUC! Save yourself some money

Well, stats say that more people from UVa get into med schools and plus I think UVa has a better overall reputation… idk…

No it would not be worth the extra money.

the stats are like that because UVA have stronger students coming in as freshmen, not because they have magic touch that Illinois doesn’t have. If I am not mistaken, UIUC is actually stronger in the sciences than UVA.

Rest assured if you was good enough to get in out of state to UVA, you will do great at UIUC.

US News graduate departmental ranking:

Math: UIUC #18; UVa #40
Bio Sci: UIUC #29; UVa #42
Chem: UIUC #7; UVa not ranked
Phys: UIUC #8; UVa #36

It is certainly not because UVa has stronger science departments.

Your peers will be marginally stronger at Virginia but you would be fine if you stayed at Illinois. The difference are environment, weather, price, history, feel. May be more of an adventure going away to school than staying at home.

Good luck. You will be fine either way.

More as in a higher percentage or more total students. I doubt UVa sends more total students to med school than UIUC. But these numbers are often dubious anyway. Take them with a big grain of salt.
The UVa atmosphere is unique among state schools and if you like it, it would be a nice change from the midwest. If you don’t you would feel like a fish out of water. Think Chicago North Shore squared.

If you plan on going to med school, go the cheaper route…you’ll need your money or borrowing power for med school.
