Uvm Transfter Thread

Who’s transferring to UVM? When do we find out?

I’m transferring to UVM next semester. Judging by when you made the post, though, I’m a little too late for my information to be helpful. Did you end up transferring?

FALL '08…hopefully

How do you think my chance is with a 3.6 at SCSU in CT? I’m involved in a club very actively, and volunteer at a hospital.

I’d say your chances are pretty good, as long as you keep up the academics. Although your transcript is the most important section of your application, a major contributor that many people overlook is recommendations. Admissions will care most about how you’re doing academically, and will want to have that backed up by your teachers. Your best bet is to get a recommendation from the teacher of the class which matches your intended major at UVM. I’d suggest getting another recommendation from the class you’re performing best in (unless it’s an elective/non academic course). Also, let them know that’s where you want to go, and why it is right for you/the school you’re at now isn’t (just try not to sound negative). You can even write your application on why UVM is the right fit as long as it isn’t boring. Make sure to apply an entire month before the application due date; UVM reviews transfer apps as they come in, and notify on a rolling basis. I submitted my application a month early and heard back within three weeks. Lastly, if you have any questions, call admissions! They’re incredibly helpful and nice, also it lets them know you’re interested.

thanks for the advice!
should i get my recommendations from only teachers this semester, or will my 2nd semester teachers be able to write them for me? I’m taking better classes next semester, but the teachers will only have known me for a month or so.

For your recommendations, it all depends on your relationship with your current teachers and how you get along with your teachers next semester. I’d say it’s fine to get a recommendation after only a month or so (it worked for me) however, you definitely want to make sure your teachers know you care. Maybe sit a little closer, engage yourself in the classroom…but try to make a genuine effort - most teachers can smell BS from a mile away. If you have a class from this semester that you’ve worked really hard in, and it shows, I’d ask that teacher. I stress that you cant just fake being into it and still get a good recommendation, you really do have to care. Maybe one recommendation from this semester, and one from your best class next semester. Remember to ask your teachers early, so UVM will have them by the time they get your application(this will really speed up the process) One last thing: you should supply the teachers writing your recs with a stamped envelope to each school you apply to. this will also speed up the process, and show that you’re on top of things. Sorry if that’s too much at once.
