UW Madison vs UIUC for Computer Engineering

Hello everyone!

I am an international student who got into UIUC and UW Madison for Computer Engineering. I know both universities are great, and I’m super happy I got in. I am trying to decide which university to go to and since my parents aren’t all too familiar with the merits of each college, I thought to turn here.

With Madison, it is roughly 10,000 dollars cheaper per year in my local currency, which adds up to 40,000, obviously a significant amount. Additionally, I would rather be in the city of Madison than Champaign.

In terms of rankings, while both are highly ranked, UIUC is somewhat higher. While rankings don’t matter too much to me, what I’d mainly like to know from y’all is whether the extra money for UIUC is worth it.

What I mean when I say worth it is: Is the extra 10,000 dollars per year for UIUC worth the potentially better education and access to jobs for international that UW Madison might offer?

I’d be happy to answer any follow up questions about my situations and would really like to hear from the rest of y’all. Thank you!

How do you know UIUC is better? Are you assuming or you have facts to show this?

Where do you want to spend four years.

If it’s Madison and it’s cheaper, it seems a no brainer to me.

I’m not sure what you mean by this. Schools don’t offer jobs - employers do. And in your case, as an international student, you would need an employer willing to sponsor your work visa and eventually, a green card. Plus, many jobs in sectors that can only employ US citizens would be unavailable to you. This has nothing to do with which school you’re at. You can apply online, and both these are fine schools with well reputed programs. Go where you want to go.

This is a mild assumption on my part for sure and no I don’t have facts to support this. It’s quite difficult to find especially for international students

I’m Singaporean so I do have the H1B1 access as well.

Do you mean you already have this visa?

You are looking at ranking.

Now, in Singapore, is UIUC known and Wisconsin not - that I don’t know.

Here, they are both great. In rank, IUIC will be higher but if you were a domestic student, you could only get one job - and many of the kids from those two schools will end up at the same companies.

As for being from Singapore, I’m not sure how it plays out.

Watch video tours of both. The city of Madison will definitely be livelier - if that matters to you.

Both will be cold - but UIUC is a bit more South but not noticeably far.
