uw, ucb, usc, cal poly, uiuc? for ME

I’ve been accepted to various school, and finally narrowed it down to UW-Seattle, USC, Cal Poly SLO, UIUC, and I"m still waiting on a decision from Berkeley. I was accepted to ME at all of the schools accept for UIUC where i applied to physics (now realizing that may have been a bad decision)

I know all of the schools rank pretty high in USWNR, I’m just confused on where to go because all of the schools are is such different area’s. I’m from Berkeley, so if accepted that would probably be my number 1. I was just wondering from some people who knew the subject if there were any big differences between these 5 programs.

Financial aid isn’t an issue.

Well, I chose Cal Poly after having a choice of all the UCs…so yeah.

As for University of Illinois, its not hard to change major from physics to ME.

take berkeley off my list, addmision results were negative today

uiuc… highest ranked out of them all

and the only one located in the middle of nowhere

haha, it’s so true :(

it might be in the middle of no where, but you will get to study with smarter students comparing to other universities listed… and you wont get robbed when you walk outside the campus like USC :P

Just because Illinois has great faculty with a highly ranked program, it doesn’t mean they’re students, on average, are smarter than kids at Cal Poly or USC. It is a public school, so it accepts a good amount of students who aren’t that good.

Not in engineering. You have to apply to the Eng school.

I disagree. As far as entering freshmen are concerned, UIUC is most definitely stronger than Cal Poly (I don’t know about USC). However, that difference might change depending on who actually graduates (if Cal Poly fails out a higher percentage of people, etc).

How do you know that Mr Payne? did you go to both UIUC and Cal Poly?

I agree with Mr Payne… I would say all the top top students in California who are planning to major in engineering would choose to go to UC Berkeley, Stanford, UCLA, or USC, and for others who dont get in will go to other UC where Cal Poly will be for those students who cant get into any of those colleges listed(If you dont believe me, you can ask students at Berkeley or Stanford) . As for UIUC, I would say, it contains the brightest student in Illinois and surrounding area because it is the best engineering school in this area (Northwestern and U of Chicago are not engineering school). The average Sat of incomming freshman class for engineering at UIUC is around 1350-1400 out of 1600. I am pretty sure that the average SAT at Cal poly would be alot less. From reasons stated, I can conclude that students at UIUC, on average, are smarter than those at Cal poly.

iwotic, Payne got in all those UC’s and went to Cal Poly.

I chose Cal Poly because I felt it had the best program for ME (and I still believe this statement). That does not mean the students are better.

Mid 50% range for engineering admits to UIUC is usually in the top 12% to top 3% class rank and 30 to 33 ACT, hardly making it shoddy. As to OP’s original question, the plain fact is that all of them are excellent for ME and what you will be taught at each is essentially the same. Cal Poly is a highly respected school in engineering circles. And you really need to make your decision based on something other than rankings. For example, being in-state at Cal Poly is going to cost a lot less than than being out-of-state at Wash or UIUC or going to a private such as USC and thus cost is a major factor to consider. Also, if you have always lived in California, I assure you that going to the “winter” and “no-hills” (literally) geography at UIUC is going to be a shock.
