UWC: Long-Term Impact & University Outcomes?

Hi everyone,

I’m a student who has recently been accepted to attend a United World College (UWC) in Europe for the IBDP. I’m very grateful for the opportunity, but I’m currently evaluating the decision carefully and would appreciate some outside perspectives.

Some questions I have:

  1. How does UWC compare academically to GLADCHEMMS/ other top boarding schools in the US?

  2. How well do UWC students place into competitive universities (Europe, UK, US)?

  3. Is the UWC reputation meaningful in university admissions, or is it mostly about individual performance? (Davis Scholarships, etc.)

  4. Are there any downsides or trade-offs (academically or socially) that I should consider?

I’m particularly interested in economics/finance.

Thanks in advance for any insights!

Insights @MYOS1634 ?

An AO friend at an Ivy visited several UWC schools every year for recruitment. My sense was that they felt there were a lot of strong, well-prepared students and that they had a very useful “intercultural fluency”. I believe UWC admissions – which is very competitive –is less based on things like legacy, athletics, and FA need than GLADCHEMMs, so it results in a bit different student body.. And again, I think AOs appreciate the screening that’s been done for them.

One of the benefits over US boarding schools is access to universities around the world. This can be helpful, not just in where you want to end up, but in managing costs, visa issues, etc.

Unfortunately, I don’t have data to back any of this up, but the school you have been admitted to can probably be helpful. At least in my circles, UWC has an excellent reputation. Hoping someone else with more direct and recent experience can chime in.

There’s a Harvard study that might interest you, btw.

Could I DM you?

Sure.
