UWMadison does attending SOAR early help with choosing the classes that fit my schedule?

Incoming freshman for UWMadison. The time of day of my classes matter a lot to me. I’m a night owl, and given how difficult college classes can be, one morning class can absolutely screw me over.

I know that for new students, I should only register for classes during SOAR, and I assume I can’t contact my advisor before that? I’ve already signed up for a SOAR session, but I’m wondering if I should move that to earlier in June.

Will registering for classes early help with getting the desired schedule I want in terms of time of day? Because I don’t want a situation where a required class only has morning slots open. Or is it not first come first serve?

I contacted the Office of Academic & Career Success, but they weren’t entirely helpful.

I don’t think so. They open seats throughout SOAR season to make things more even in terms of registration. My kid was relatively late and had no problem getting everything desired for classes into 2 majors. That said, there is no guarantee of success of your first choice times/scheduling either.

Your later registration periods are set up by credit numbers. If you come in with more credits, you may be in a better position to get first choices.

One factor students sometimes (often?) care about when selecting classes is how hard is it to make an A (or to pass). At UW–Madison, historical letter grade distributions for different courses, different instructors, and different semesters can be found at https://madgrades.com and http://wisc.alext.se. Both websites make use of data from the school’s registrar. You may find this useful.
