On the idea of alerting the students, has anyone ever heard of a bull horn? “Attention this is an official campus lock down. All students need to return to their rooms immediately until notified.”

They use them on military bases, why not campus’s. No explanation needed to be given (causing panic), just an announcement that there is a serious security issue and that everyone needs to go to their rooms.

You’d be crucified because it’s BS. I am right, you know it. I think it’s stupid to say that ALL men are potential killers or something, but that’s not what I’m saying. My contention is that my viewpoint is a compromise between pro-gun and pro-gun controllers, and you know these violence statistics would comply if modern guns were replaced by mythical Smart Guns (only firing if they detected a non-coerced female bearer). Alas, this is the stuff of science fiction.

I think it is irresponsible for the college to have waited so long to notify students. Two people dead, by handgun, you don’t know if the shooter lives on or off campus, why not err on the side of caution. Why speculate as to the cause. The above sounds good to me.

Are you really holding up that list of 11 women (and I could take issue with those women’s depression being part of a greater context of historical subjugation and marginalization to the home due to religious influences) against an essentially infinite history of male-perpetrated violence and saying there’s still some parity? Give me a break. The fact that an article about female murderers can even make a personalized list with their names and stories just goes to show how disparate the statistics are. It proves my point beautifully. Give me an article about homicidal men killing their families…yeah, you won’t have a personalized list of a handful of cases. You’ll have a disgusting, huge, impersonal number.

Breaking News: All women who attend rutgers get academically dismissed. If it happened to dicey, it happens to all. Your sexism is amazing, no wonder you were dismissed…hope this helps

The delay between the two shooting events is a concern. Recently at my sons college(RPI) a young man was found dead in a classroom building and preliminary indications were that the injuries were consistant with a shooting. The campus was immediately shut down, classes cancelled. One of my son’s friend was in the building where the fatality occurred and campus police swarmed the building, locking down every classroom.

It was discovered later on that the young man(an alum) had a history of mental problems and had jumped off a multistory stairwell to his death.

After the first shooting I just cannot fathom any reason why the campus would not be on lockdown with the shooter missing. Did they just assume he had left the campus? There is no way any college could have prevented the first shooting incident. But the second?

Armed students on campus? I don’t believe that it would have prevented any mentally unhinged person from acting out and students with firearms would have been shooting each other in the confusion. I grew up in a household that had plenty of guns…we actually had a firing range at home, but I believe that automatic rifles and hand guns should be banned. The NRA believes that tightening up gun control laws is the beginning of the slippery slope and I am disgusted by them and their lobby.

singersmom, poetsheart and anyone else who is personally suffering from this tragedy. I am just so sorry and so sad for you and the VT community. I will keep you all in my prayers and in my thoughts and in my heart.

I’ve just read the partial list of victims names and I feel like I’ve been crushed…the names make it so real and unbearable.

Ellemeast, I agree with your comment on auto or semiauto weapons. They should be banned. I too am a gun owner(7 rifles and one pistol)but all are either for hunting or are family antiques. I suspect that most other gun owners are like me and have no need for military or police style guns. However they are the gun of choice among criminals. I heard a report that 250,000(750,000?) are manufactured in the USA for general purchase every year.
