I do know that Cleveland has the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame? I believe? And Canton, Ohio has the Football Hall of Fame, although your D may not be into that! ;)

Toronto is a very nice, clean city with great ethnic restaurants! None that I can think of to recommend, though, sorry! Toronto has the famous CN tower which is cool at the top.

Recent family vacations for us (H, S1, S2, me) have included Costa Rica (Osa Peninsula… highly recommend as there’s something for everyone! Wildlife / hiking (Corcovado Nat’l Park is down there), surfing, etc… Woke every morning to spider monkeys, macaws and other wildlife right outside bedroom window); on safari in South Africa (game lodges in Sabi Sands and Timbavati Game Reserves outside Kruger (going on safari in Africa was our boys most favorite trip - ever); beach resorts in Jamaica, Curacao, Bahamas, Mexico; rented an estate in the English countryside and toured Bath, Stonehenge, etc…; trips to London, Paris, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Ghent; various locations / cities throughout the states. H and I just returned in mid-December from 10+ days in the Maldives (lovely, lovely, lovely!) and just in time, it would seem. I would highly recommend going there, though it involves 30+ hours of travel time to get there / 30+ hours to return to the states. The island resort we stayed at was family-friendly, though most of the kids I saw were in the 6 - 10 year old range.

Oops… just read earlier posts that OP would prefer to stay in the states. National parks in UT are lovely but yes, hot, in the summer months. If you’re considering exploring UT / AZ / NV parks, you can rent a houseboat and cruise Lake Powell. Loads of fun from what I’m told (families in the mountain west do this during the summer)… swimming, hiking, jetskiing, waterskiing, etc… Alternative which always works for our family is fly to San Francisco, rent a car and drive down the coast to LA or San Diego. Plenty to see / do on that route.

chocchipcookie - we have been to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Football Hall of Fame. Big football fans here - so we had to go Looking for a destination near Cleveland - or within driving distance of Cleveland.

Not too far from Cleveland - Cedar Point Amusement Park with some of the best roller coasters in the world. If you stay at the in-park properties you get a 1 hour early entry that lets you on some of the roller coasters with minimal lines. If you have significant cash, they offer VIP tours where you can jump lines and hit all the rides in one day, $425/person.
