Vacation ideas with toddlers

Last summer we were to take a family trip with our adult children, their spouse and toddlers; of course, it didn’t happen. We just decided about 2 weeks ago that we should go to the beach as the adults have all been vaccinated. We actually found a week that worked for all 6 adults the end of July, which was a miracle! I mentioned on another thread that due to the late decision, what I believe is the entire world wanted a vacation this year, and rental homes trying to recoup lost income from last year, we haven’t had much luck in finding a house we want.

We would like a house with a pool as it would be so much easier with the little girls, who will be 25 months and 33 months. While we would like to be a short walk to the beach, if there is a place to drop off the girls and a parent, the rest of us are willing to walk farther. Our family has either gone to Hilton Head or 30a, and would like to do the same, but 30a is packed, so during Covid, not sure we want to deal with that. We would cook most night, and do pick up the other; no plans to eat in a restaurant. So while we could go to a busy beach area, most likely other than at the beach, we won’t encounter many people. I would guess we would be at the beach in the early hours of the morning only, which is why a house with a pool would be nice. We would also consider a complex pool if it isn’t jam packed.

My son, wife and daughter just came back from a weekend at the beach, and it seems my son is no longer a fan of the beach. It became a joke that he couldn’t wait to get home and vacuum the sand out of his car! He said maybe we should think about a fly trip to somewhere like Denver where we could hike and run with the girls. We are all in three different states (kids in Texas and Louisiana, us Georgia) so if we drove, the panhandle of Florida is best, the South Carolina coast or nearby, as the kids would drive to us, spend the night, and we would drive the next day. One child would prefer a drive due to cost, the other would prefer to fly due to having a toddler :grinning:

Looking for ideas of a place that is somewhat Covid safe, something toddlers friendly, and a place the adult children might be able to escape from their children for a few hours while the grandparents are available to babysit!! Also, while not mandatory, I think my daughter would prefer to be near a decent hospital as her daughter has some severe food allergies. Being in a houseful of people, especially another toddler, she worried about her daughter getting a hold of something she shouldn’t.

Any suggestions for a location outside of Hilton Head or 30a that would fit the bill?

We’ve been staying at our beach house in Sea Pines most of the year and it’s been great. I’m sure with covid you could easily find a house or condo on or right off the beach fairly easily. If you stay away from the hotel areas it will be nice and quiet on the beach. Hospital right near the airport.

What is 30A?

I suggest trying to find a condo resort kind of thing, with a beach but other water options fot the kids (we are in NJ and liked seapointe village in Wildwood crest, way out if your way, but just to give you an idea of the concept). We rent a beach house for a week every year, holy price increase and lack of inventory! We scrambled in January to book a house we can tolerate that is costing $4000 more than last year.

@Mjkacmom That is exactly what we are finding; low inventory and rates at unheard of prices! Some are showing cleaning fees up to $1000 for extra cleaning due to Covid; my guess is many aren’t cleaning any differently that in years past. I have always booked in January, and many years, rented the same house twice. We haven’t been with the kids in over 10 years, so haven’t had to house hunt in a while; if just my husband and I, we rent a condo.

@jpga13 We have only found 2 homes in HHI, both in Palmetto Dunes that we could live with. While we prefer Sea Pines, there was nothing. We even considered Bradley Beach, thinking maybe there would be something; there was not.

While we are vaccinated, we still would like to avoid crowd. Our group is still wearing mask when out, so unless out in the open, not close to others, we still would want to wear mask.

@thumper1 30A is a stretch of beaches on the panhandle of Florida along Highway 30A. There are many planned communities in the area and very crowed during the summer. Prior to Covid, we didn’t mind the crowds; at least for this year, we don’t feel comfortable being in the thick of it all.

God love ya’. Anywhere with toddlers is no vacation. Good luck!

Don’t know if you are willing to all fly to Jamaica…but this is a fun one and some friends loved it. Sesame Street Characters could be hired to read bedtime stories!my friend went to Beaches Negril. Don’t know if this package is still available there.

@thumper1 While that looks like fun, we are not ready for an out of the country trip at this time.

I think that’s smart. My sister was planning on taking her kids and my daughter to Cabo for spring break (she went there a few months ago and the resort was empty), but with the risks of one testing positive and have to quarantine in Mexico, she switched to Florida.

After lots of searching we found a great house on Siesta Key for our family vacation with 5 grandchildren, ages 1-5. Newly rehabbed, all one floor, brand new pool with large sun shelf (very shallow area), walking distance to shops and restaurants, across the street from the beach. I just booked it late last week.

I had it narrowed down to 5 houses, each with its pros and cons. My children made the final selection.

If the Sunday drum circle is happening it is a fun time, especially with kids. My D always loved it. Have a great trip!

@cincy_gal I also looked at Siesta Key; unfortunately, nothing there either :slightly_frowning_face: When I was a teenager, I went every year to Siesta Key with my aunt, uncle, and younger cousins as a babysitter. Free vacation for me, and some free time for my aunt and uncle!

Yes, I had read about the drum circle and will definitely check it out. Thanks for the link with suggestions.

Two and three years thrive on space to play, inside and outside - and adults to play with! Focus on someplace that allows for safe inside play (not worrying about breaking anything valuable), outside space where you stay (either a pool or yard or neighborhood you can take walks) and easy excursions to places like parks, playgrounds, a zoo, etc.

Beyond that choose based on adult needs!

Check out Ocean City NJ. There are tons of rentals…most are three bedrooms but some are larger. We rented a seven bedroom one one year with friends…we went preseason so it wasn’t as pricey.

If you get something on Asbury or Central, you will be a short walk to the beach. OC bills itself as a family resort town.

End of July will be very peak season there so will likely be costly…and if you have been to Cape May, you might want to look elsewhere.

How about Sanibel? Is there any availability there?

St. Petersburg, FL might meet your needs. Lots of beach/ocean and also lots of activities for those who want something else. At least in the past…and pre-Covid.

@snowball Our short list also included houses on Anna Maria Island. Did you look there? Not sure how many bedrooms you need and what week you are considering, but I found some 6-BR houses on Anna Maria Island with pools w/slides, that were about a block from the beach. Still available for July 3-10 and July 10-17.

The 5-BR house we rented on Siesta Key still has July 3-14 available.

I’m happy to share info if you are interested.

I believe you can only rent a home on Sanibel for 1 month or more. Condos are available for weekly rentals. We loved Casa Ybel Resort.
