Vacuum Cleaner for Dorm

My son is a freshman and will be living in either Monroe or Sharp. Tulane’s list of things to bring includes “Vacuum Cleaner or sweeper (a Must!)”. Does he really need that? I have heard the dorm has some things to loan out or check out to students. Is a vacuum cleaner one of those? I assume that the communal areas - bathrooms, halls, lounges, etc. - are cleaned by the school. Does that cleaning service enter the individual rooms at all?

My S was in Sharp this past year. He did not have a vacuum cleaner. I understand he could have borrowed one, however, he went for a full year without ever vacuuming his room. It didn’t seem to bother him or his roommate. The communal areas are indeed cleaned by the school. On move-out day, it was required that the room be vacuumed (a vacuum was provided). We found tons of treasures in that room on move-out day – socks, underwear, cell phones, coins, electric razors, room keys, mail box keys, ID’s, Mardi Gras beads, etc. To answer your question, no cleaning service in their right & sober mind would ever enter an individual’s room.

I literally LOL’d!

FC – Hahaha. Glad to be keeping you amused. But to correct my statement, I should have said “no cleaning service in their right & sober mind would ever enter a freshman boy’s room.”

I actually filled that part in! Great minds and all that. Well not really. Just anyone with a son, lol.

Technically the dorm provides vacuums to use, however I’ve never lived in a dorm (I’ve lived in 3 different ones at Tulane) that has had a working vacuum. They are old, beat up, and worn out. I bought http://www.walmart.com/ip/Eureka-Boss-Bagless-Stick-Vacuum/12174201</a> this vacuum, which breaks down into two pieces. It’s cheap, small, and most of all, it works. I know guys very rarely have their own vacuum, but once my guy friends found out I had it, someone was borrowing it all the time.

Given the beachfront right outside of Sharp, that vacuum may come in handy. :)

My mom put a vacuum as well as an iron in my room on move-in–neither left my closet for the entire year.

I sent my daughter a vacuum after mid-year and her boyfriend borrowed it. Keeper. I don’t remember the brand. I did a Google search for vacuum reviews and bought one that was recommended, with extra bags, for less than $100. I am thinking that it will last a long time because it won’t get much use.
