We currently have an Oreck and it’s doing an AWFUL job.
So, I’m in the market for a new vacuum.
Dyson gets good reviews…but they are very expensive, even the refurbished ones. I would buy one though if it did a good job and I knew it would last.
Any recommendations? We have lots of yellow dog hair on our dark red rugs…

I’m waiting for a sale on the Roomba 562.

I went through several vacuums that got clogged with dog hair until I got a Miele cannister vac. It works great!

Our home has central vac but I invested in a Dyson because of recommendations for pet hair issues. I have not been disappointed. It was worth every penny. I should add that we have 4 dogs and 2 cats. ;)

We also have central vac and and Dyson, but I only use the Dyson. I did get the one label for pets, but that was several years ago and I would get any model would work as well.

While the coupon for Bed, Bath and Beyond says it can not be used for Dyson, I was able to use one. The clerk must not have known, and I didn’t bother to correct her! I had several items and a few coupons and she took 20% off of the most expensive items. I know of others that have also used the coupon on items that it shouldn’t have been used for. Maybe the stores should train their help better.

Roomba, roomba - look at the You tube films on line. Roombas are great. I love mine. I had a Miele and the pet hair clogged up the turbo brush. Had to get it fixed every two months.

Roomba can be taken apart easily and the brushes cleaned. There is a robotics forum that has lots of comments on how great the robot vacuums are for pet hair (and not just the roomba - there are others, too!)

We’ve always had at least one golden retriever or German Shepherd, and for a few years a long-haired cat also: year-round high-volume shedding! Always a combination of wood floors and Persian rugs.

We’ve had a Eureka canister vac: worked very well for well over a decade.

Now we have a Eureka upright: also works very well.

I love the way my Dyson handles the copious amount of dog hair in our house.

I had a Roomba years ago and the battery was defective. It would only run about 15 min after a full charge. They sent me a new one… same thing. Roomba has lived in the closet for several years now. Disappointing!

I have the purple pet-hair model Dyson and I love it. I have never had a vacuum that I liked before this one. I think it is well worth the money.

Look at the Robot Reviews forum. It’s got lots of postings on the roomba.

Sorry Allthisisnew to me - my sister-in-law had one, too, and ended up taking it back. That was three years.

They have seriously changed and are upgraded. And not only that you can reprogram your roomba - there are also on line forums that tell you how you can hack into the chip.

Stores like Target have the older models - I bought a fifth generation machine from Amazon and do far it’s working like a dream.

Another purple Dyson user here. We got ours at Costco, and I love it. I’m not too thrilled about plastic parts protruding from the surface of the dust-collecting bin, but Dyson is a dirt-eating beast! I tested my new Dyson on the dining room rug right after vacuuming it with my old vacuum cleaner and was amazed how much cat hair the old one did not pick up! It was a great investment for my pet-loving family with mild allergies. I also heard geat things about Miele canisters, but they were more expensive than Dysons at the time I got mine.

I am also in love with my Dyson and it is at least 5 years old. We have a dog and a cat and the Dyson is just great. My roomba does the cleaning every other day and does surprisingly well. I am always amazed and disgusted by how much dirt is in my house.

We recently purchased a Hoover WindTunnel Anniversary Edition Bagless U5786-900 from Costco. It was advertised as good for pet hair and cost was reasonable. It’s also a recommended model in Consumer Reports.

So far it does a great job of picking up pet hair. The only thing is that you do have to empty it several times while vacuuming. Of course the corollary is that your bagged model isn’t doing so good with a full bag of hair. We did an experiment by vacuuming an area after using our old vacuum and were surprised at the amount of hair the new vac picked up.

Can anyone comment on this?
When we purchased new (expensive) carpet for our house last year, we were cautioned against using a dyson machine because it is reputed to actually suck the tufts out of the carpet backing.

I’ve never had my carpet tufts get sucked out and some of my carpet is pretty darn cheap.

The only carpet tufts that my Dyson sucks up are the ones that have been clawed out of the carpet backing by my kitties :)

I have a very hairy dog (Norwegian elkhound) and a cat; the (purple) dyson is great. I also have a roomba that I sometimes run to spruce things up before guests arrive, but it hasn’t been working too well lately.

I have a Riccar upright and the purple Dyson “The Animal”. The Dyson is a good vacuum but I really LOVE the Riccar. It is so easy to use and the suction is great! They are pricey, but just an excellent vacuum. I have three pets, two cats and a dog, and they are ALL long haired!

I have the Dyson Animal and hate it. Every time I vacuum I wonder why I believed it was going to be great.

If it had cost 2/3 less than it did, I might be a little bit happy with it. It cost nearly $500!!

The roller brush gets more covered up than any I have ever had. I have to sit with scissors and cut and pull stuff off it at least monthly.

For anything bigger than a dime size piece of paper you have to put the side that has the tube over it or it won’t pick it up.

The sound it makes when you vacuum up against the sofa is unbearable. (shrieking)

You have to undo the entire cord to use the wand.

There’s no bag but emptying the cannister causes dust to fly everywhere. You have bang it to get everything out or try to stick your hand in there.
