Vacuum for a student apartment?

Any brand/model recommendations for a vacuum cleaner for a student apartment? I’m leaning towards getting a quality one, as I think it will encounter some challenging tasks… Thanks!

I ended up buying a Hoover Wind Tunnel for about $100. It came up as a pretty well rated vacuum. Since it was not expensive, I do not worry about it.

The carpet in our D’s apartment is your typical commercial-grade carpet with very low pile. It’s quite easy to clean with an inexpensive stick vacuum that costs less than $50. You might want to find out exactly what type of flooring they will be dealing with. Carpet with a higher pile will be harder to clean.

Bag less type is probably better since they can see when the bin is full.
One of my kids had a roomie who didn’t know that you don’t vacuum up milk and cereal, or vomit. Ugly lesson to learn. Go with a cheap one if there are room-mates.

Check out Costco…

Definitely bagless Hoover Windtunnel! I prefer not having to go out and buy bags.

You’re kidding!

Son had an inexpensive Dirt Devil. It was fine.

Great points – thanks. I hadn’t thought about it before, but I think bagless is definitely the way to go.

I have both a $100 bagless Hoover Windtunnel and a $169.00 Shark Navigator. Like them both but probably prefer the Shark because it is easier to dump the debris and reattach the “dumpster”. The Shark is also a little more nimble and sleek.

I bought the vacuum with bags because I don’t like emptying the dust and dirt. It is also a good idea to get a package of belts.

Nothing rechargeable! Get one with a cord. My first college vacuum was rechargeable and I wanted to chuck it out the window.

I personally wouldn’t buy a $169 Shark vacuum for child’s college apartment. There are plenty of inexpensive options unless money is of no concern.

$169 is pretty cheap for a vacuum???

Personally I hate bagless, at least the one I have. There are 3 different filters that clog up and you have to wash or the stupid thing doesn’t work. I think it’s a Bissel or something.

Check out garage sales over the summer. Our college apartments had a community vacuum cleaner that everyone in the building could use, a few of them really. It was college owned housing so that may have made a difference but something to look into anyway.

Dragonmom - I think that calls for a wet dry shop vac… which might not be a bad choice for a college apartment…

Seriously, I suggest a run to the nearest thrift shop. I know the one at our church always has 2 or 3 on sale at around $25. Since I am one of the guys who tests them and puts on the new belts, I can tell you they are just fine - especially for a college apartment. We have a one month warranty - if it breaks in a month come back and we will give you another one.

I had a cheap $40 Dirt Devil that lasted me through ugrad and grad school. That being said…it did not handle my long hair very well. I have since upgraded to a Dyson that doesn’t bat an eye at long hair

Dyson… NOW we’re getting up there in price!

Seriously…I was thinking that my 20 something kids were NOT getting Dyson vacs at my expense!

We have a Hoover we picked up at the swap shack at our dump. We have central vac but there is an office in our finished downstairs where it doesn’t reach. The Hoover (for free) is perfect.

I should have mentioned this earlier - we bought a Kirby at a flea market for $25 before my son was born… He graduates from college in May… and the Kirby is still sucks… :D

Are you sure that one isn’t provided? I’ve always had a vacuum provided, in both on and off campus housing.
