Once you’re in the “minus” category, it’s just DARN cold!!!
Yesterday we were in the 60s, today it’s 22. Ice/snow/wintry mix are in the forecast for tonight and tomorrow, perhaps through Wednesday. Down south that’s a big deal. We don’t have the equipment to deal with weather that may only happen two or three times per decade for a couple of days. Roads could get really bad tomorrow morning, so I’m glad it’s a holiday for many.
Dh was supposed to drive back home tomorrow (8 hr. trip) and got annoyed last night when I suggested he return today ahead of the sleet and snow that he would likely encounter. Somehow the forecast is my fault. Last year, when I assumed he was paying attention to the forecast, he got stuck at work after the roads iced over and had to sleep in his office. He never got around to preparing an emergency bag, so he had no Rx meds, no travel CPAP, and no change of clothes. By the second day, he had a killer migraine. When a coworker’s husband was finally able to bring him home in a 4WD truck, they saw hundreds of abandoned vehicles along the roadside.
D1 lives north of us and has already said she plans to telecommute Monday - Wednesday unless her forecast changes drastically. Once again our family in FL is feeling pretty smug.
morrismm (post #28): I have lived in New England & Florida and now when I say moving “South”, I’m talking about halfway down the coast, but not back to FL. I like the change of the seasons too, but with more moderate temperatures. Milder winters, longer Springs and Summers and Falls. I can deal with small amounts of snowfall, but not such bitter cold temps. I’m really looking forward to the change in a few years.
We took a long walk in our neighborhood yesterday, while wearing short sleved clothes. (We wanted to get as much exposure of our skin to the warm sunshine as we can.)
We will likely do the same this afternoon. No wonder the housing cost is so high here in the bay area!
There’s a new photo going around on Boston’s Fox news station - all you see is a huge snow mound, with a hockey stick sticking out horizontally from it, and a bucket hanging from the end of the hockey stick, with the caption ‘Boston’s newest mailbox.’
teriwtt, I have a son living in Boston and there’s a sign posted, “Welcome to Boston! Closed Mondays!” :-j
Yea, I’ve seen that one, too!
It’s a good thing most schools were going to be closed tomorrow for President’s Day anyway.
Well, this “blizzard” was a bust. We were slated to get at least a foot of snow, and I think we actually got 2 or 3 inches. It has been very, very windy though, with some drifting.
Today it is cold and clear and beautiful with blue sunny skies. (And wind. ) I’m off to do my duty at the dog park!
We’ve been having a LOT of wind here that keeps knocking out our power. We had two outages in the past 48 houros–for 1.5 and 2.5 hours so far. Irritating! Fortunately, today seems MUCH calmer and beautiful warm blue skies.
Over 15 inches here. The snow banks on the walk to our front door are almost as high as the snowblower chute - not sure what happens when it gets higher! More snow forecast for Tuesday and now they’re talking about another storm next Sunday - ugh! We’ve shoveled off our small deck three times already and the garage roof once - not that you can tell! Tomorrow DH will work on clearing the edges of our main roof and I will attempt to shovel out the dryer vent so I can do laundry. I’m so happy when we build our sunroom last year that we only put a small deck on the house and build a large patio! You don’t need to shovel patios! And I’m very glad we have snowshoes or we wouldn’t be able to get out back at all. The snow piles in front of the house are 4-5 feet high - just one long pile. You can’t even tell there are shrubs there, just the trees on either side of the front door which are 3/4 covered in snow. Poor dog can’t go anywhere unless we’ve dug out a path for him!
Is it really supposed to snow again on Tuesday? How much this time?
The winds here are quite gusty. I keep waiting for the power to go out.
My landlords (who live above me) filled their bathtub up in case the power went out. They never take baths. Apparently the bath tub being full causes a pipe to leak and one of the my ceiling tiles to cave in. Showering in that bathroom does not create any problems.
@thumper1 - unfortunately yes. Looks like eastern MA, RI and southeastern CT are in the 4-8 inch range except southeastern MA before the Cape which is higher. The rest of CT is 3-5. Hopefully we’ll stay in the 4-8 inch area and not the higher pink area! I think I’ll need to learn how to work the snowblower for this storm!
When the snow is higher than the snowblower chute you take very narrow paths and go more slowly. Another memory I prefer to have in the distant past. You also blow well past the driveway’s end so when they do plow you don’t have a huge pile of hard chunks to clear. So many skills I likely will never need again…
16.2 inches at Logan airport in Boston, the official total.
We got at least 8"of new cover, nothing wimpy here. Wish I could send a picture of the snow heaps. Excellent for tunneling into, one of my fav memories as a kid. And no, they haven’t plowed our street. We have a power shovel, which sounds dumber than it is. Kind of a mini blower. Works except when it’s heavy wet snow.
We were at a wedding Saturday in Braintree MA and left this afternoon. I can’t believe the amount of snow they have in the area.
My cousin who lives in Providence Rhode Island posted a picture of her “white picket fence” around her house. You can only see the very tips. Completely buried!
Well, we (SW coastal CT) got only an inch or so of snow yesterday, but the wind was wild. This morning, it started out a 0 degrees, and is now all the way to a balmy 6.
What do you do to keep pipes from freezing?
