Has UF ever rejected a Val or Sal of a Florida high school? If all other parts of the application are fairly decent (aka SATs, ECs, essay, rigor) does val or sal status “almost” guarantee acceptance?

I believe it should guarantee but you never know. UF is known for being unpredictable in their selections. I have heard people who were rejected by UF but somehow got in UChicago and Brown. Overall, I think vals and sals do get in automatically.

No, i don’t think anything guarantees acceptance to UF. I know from my high school, the vals for the 2 years above mine didn’t get accepted.

UF doesn’t give automatic consideration to vals/sals, but clearly, they would likely be very strong candidates. If one isn’t selected (which happens, but rarely), I would think it has to do with class “rigor”, test scores, or EC’s (50% of UF’s holistic admissions is based on ECs/Leadership/Essay).

It wouldn’t guarantee acceptance, but it would look good on an application and would help someone get in. Being a valedictorian or salutatorian would have the same impact as having multiple leadership positions, playing a varsity sport throughout high school, or being a National Merit Scholar. Having one of these things alone doesn’t mean you’ll get in, but they do add on to your application.

The titles of Val & Sal are typically assigned towards the end of senior year. So, during the application process, nobody knows who they’re going to be. UF’s app just asks if you’re top 10%, top quarter, top half, or bottom half. The higher the one you’re in, the better your chances are. Unless you know your specific ranking during the application period, it won’t help you much. But I did hear that the 2010 Val from my high school got rejected from UF, yet got accepted to Boston College. You can never be sure. If anything, the titles really just solidify your acceptance.

As others have pointed out being a Val or Sal does not automatically guarantee admission to UF. Howevr, if you go to a Florida public high school, the principal of each high school can place the name of the Val or Sal into the Talented Twenty Program, which guarantees
admission to a state 4 year university, although it does not guarantee admission to a particular choice. The caveat is that you must meet the state minimum for SAT or ACT scores to fulfill eligibility requirements for the Talented Twenty Program.
