Value of a Finance Minor?

Hi guys I am a returning student in my mid 20s entering my senior year at a large state university in CA. I will be graduating with a Political Science Major but have decided to add a semester to my stay and get a business minor. My school offers a basic business adminstration minor covering a single finance class, the basic accounting classes, a mgmt, a marketing class, etc etc or you can do a specialized minor of accounting or finance etc.

Looking at which of my peers are the most succesful today its gotta be the finance majors and I was wondering whether you think a finance minor will give my resume an extra kick or am I over valuing the weight of a minor?

Thanks!!

Hi, just to give you a little background I recently graduated with a finance degree, so I cannot tell you from personal experience about a finance minor, I can only offer my advice and opinion.

I am really glad that I had the opportunity to be a teaching assistant this past semester for the principles of finance class that is required for all business students. One of the biggest things that I learned is that most people in this class are not going to be prepared for the “money” part of their life in the future. Some of topics covered like time value of money, annuities, compounding interest, and amortization tables are REAL LIFE THINGS. But so many students were just focused on passing the class and not actually learning anything. I think finance is an essential part of knowing how to take care of yourself and your financial situation, at it’s basic core.

With that said, I have always been told that a minor is not necessarily going to help boost your resume. This is just my personal opinion here, but I truly think if someone is getting a minor just to put it on a resume they are wasting their time. On the flip side of things if finance is something you may be interested in and you are interested in building a solid foundation of basic finance I would say definitely go for it. Try to learn as much as you can!

Is it worth the extra couple of thousand dollars strictly to pick up a business minor? I would say no. Understanding finance, as the person above me mentioned, does help in many aspects of life, however.

If any minor is applicable for a liberal arts major, it’ll be accounting or finance. Just my opinion…

i second what trizz says.

First of all thank you all for the feedback

I am going to continue working on my business minor and depending on how things go may or may not try for a double minor, business adminstration n finance. Id like it to put on a resume so I am a candiate for a MBA and kinda sell myself as someone who has shown the analytical and writing/communication skills of a poly sci major and a basic business background.

Between a finance minor and Business admin minor, why don’t you just double major?.

Passing CFA Level 1 > almost all UG finance programs.

Im entering my senior year and I need 18credits for a business minor maybe 21 for a finance minor and a business major would be like 30+. Still your raise a good point, part of my reluctance to extend my stay in school is that Im 24 living with my dad moved back when I was 21 and im ready to get back to full time work, that n my dads caught me doin the nasty and hes a old yuppie but we dont have any money

18+21=39…even if a few of the courses overlap, I don’t see a major difference between just adding the double major. Thanks for the explanation though. Lol
