Vanderbilt or NYU or McGill

Im Canadian and ive been accepted to Vanderbilt, NYU (both for CAS) and soon to be accepted to McGill. I am undecided with my major, but would really like to go to law school after undergrad. Cost isnt a deciding factor, but i dont want to put the burden of such high tuition on my parents unless i was sure it was the better option. I would like to know which of the three universities you feel has the best undergraduate experience and the highest chance of allowing me to maintain a high GPA?

My DD goes to McGill, it is really hard to get a high GPA because the tests are all mutliple choice, with no essays(she’s a sophomore). She has found this to be frustrating because she is much better at explaining things in an essay. She has received “A’s” but she has had to work like a dog to study very hard so that she can be sure to answer the test questions as close to the study material as possible. She has enjoyed her classes, has had good success with meeting with TA’s and professors when she needs to discuss things. She is applying to the honors program and has secured an internship in a campus lab this summer.

Vanderbilt is a private school and the only thing I know is my dentist went there for one year and hated it, she tranferred because she could not stand the social scene. Go visit McGill and Vanderbilt, stay overnight and see what you like.

My friends daughter attends NYU, she is from California. NYU has a housing system which places students all over Manhattan, which is fine if you like to use the subway everyday to get to class. It is very expensive, she is currently trying to get financial aid, but is applying during her freshman year, and it does not seem she can get it now and is unsure if she can afford to go next year.

i know nothing of mcgill except that it is well regarded academically. my cousin went to vanderbilt and was crazy about it (she actually met her husband there!). i agree with raising2 that you should visit there - that will help your decision a lot. nyu is a really unique place, but you have to be very independent to enjoy it there. since that lifestyle is an acquired taste, you should think hard or visit before you pay that crazy price tag!

NYU and Vanderbilt are very different. Vanderbilt has a self-contained campus, leafy and green, but easy access to the downtown, and it is surrounded by restaurants, bookshops, coffee shops, etc. Virtually all students live on campus, and while there is little or nothing in the way of pubic transport, there isn’t much need for it. The meal ticket can be used for cab fare. A lot of entertainment is on campus, but students also go into town.

I wouldn’t base a decision on whether or not someone’s dentist found it hard to make compatible friends. Based on the stereotypes, my son almost passed on Vanderbilt, but after a couple of visits he changed his mind. He is not the stereotypical type of student many people seem to have in mind, but he is very happy there.

I do suggest a visit to all three.

And I must say, that thing about all the tests at McGill being multiple choice is not exactly a rousing recommendation for a good school.

mcgill has the best reputation of those for law school but its very underfunded/ghetto, you will probably get a better education at NYU, but if you can get a good gpa at mcgill you will be fine for law
