Thanks glorymom! As a Billy Joel fan since forever (probably listened to The Stranger hundreds of times, and saw him live at the Last Play at Shea a few years ago), I adored this video, both for Billy’s willingness to take a chance on the kid, and the boy’s virtuoso performance.

My D was lucky enough to attend this performance in Langford Hall, an amazing venue for 1100 that allows for an intimate experience with the performer/presenter. She stood in line for 2 hours to buy tickets for her BF’s Christmas present, but they were a deal - $45 for the two. She said it was an amazing evening and this student performance was the highlight. We discussed this in the Vanderbilt forum several weeks back and some of the others had kids who attended and felt the same. Lots of jealous parents in that discussion. For most of us with college kids/young adults, Billy Joel is one of the iconic musical figures of our young adulthood. Like Momma J, I’ve listened to The Stranger more than a few times!

I just saw it on Facebook but a friend knew a student who saw it at the time. How great for that kid! Can you imagine how proud his parents are of that? I always loved Billy Joel and how great that he took a chance on the kid. Did you notice he asked him what key he could play it in and I think the boy said whatever key you want - or what key do you want me to play? Clearly a great pianist can transpose keys easily, so that had to have been a sign.

eyemamom, the first video I saw of this was taken by one of Michael’s friends and you can hear him say “What key do you want it in?” as he bounded up the stairs which got a good laugh from the crowd. This story has picked up some good legs six weeks down the road (actual concert was Jan. 30) and they just did a short segment on it on the Today Show. Willie Geist is a VU alum, so he may have been a good link to helping this get some national publicity.

Someone posted that on my twitter feed. Very cool.
Love Billy Joel, he needs to tour more.

Because it is one of highlights of my " empty nest" lifestyle, I will brag again about the opportunity I had to sing onstage two separate times with Mike McCready ( lead guitarist for Pearl Jam) at the Crocodile in Seattle during recent fundraisers.
( with several other local musicians)
I sang “Rockin’ in the Free World” (preselected set list to choose from, & that one is fairly easy & fun to do)
I have always thought of myself as fairly quiet, even shy, but when I was on stage I wasn’t nervous at all & kept thinking how I could stay up there all day!
I can’t wait to do it again. ( although I may get a vocal coach first)
