Vanderbilt to Yale (Jackson Institute)

Next year I will graduate with an M.A. in Area Studies from Vanderbilt University. At Vanderbilt I received several fellowships (including Dept. of Education) and had many internship opportunities, most notably with the Council on Hemispheric Affairs in D.C. I will graduate with a strong GPA (3.8) and have good GRE scores (164/164/6.0).

Before Vanderbilt I lived and worked full-time for 2.5 years in South America, in both the private and NGO sectors. I am fluent in Spanish (C2) and have a strong grasp of both Portuguese and French (B2).

I’m only interested in Yale’s M.A. in Global Affairs. I know Jackson looks for high-caliber students, and I worry that my profile simply isn’t up to snuff. I would be grateful for feedback from anyone who is familiar with the program.

Thanks in advance! (I apologize for curtness, I’d be happy to elaborate in the comments.)

Although I am not very familiar with this program, I do know that your GRE scores land above the median for accepted students. Their website says 162,157,5.0 are their median scores, all of which are below your scores. Your GPA is also above their median for accepted students (3.7). You definitely have a good shot at acceptance!

Why are you only interested in one graduate program? It may be a very good one, but it seems unnecessarily self-limiting. What would you do if you were not admitted?

My suggestion is for you to consider an MBA at the Yale SOM, where you can develop an overlapping degree. Further, if you are hispanic you could look into the following, which provides unheard full scholarships at several top b programs–see:http://www.cgsm.org/
