Vandy or Emory?

Any evident differences…

I have no idea, and I am only going to apply to one or the other, b/c I have plenty of other colleges on my app list!

statistically identical, but they attract two distinctly different types of people.

So who is the Vandy “type” and who is the Emory “type?”

I don’t agree that there is a Vanderbilt “type”. I’ve seen a lot of different types of students, and I’m pretty sure my son would not fit any known stereotype of a Vanderbilt student, but he is highly successful there, likes it and has a ton of friends.

My advice, if you want to call it that, is to look at the course offerings closely, availability of research opportunities in a field that interests you, and the differences in the campus/city interaction. Another poster who has experience with both Emory and Vanderbilt has written that she thinks Emory has considerably less of a traditional “campus feel” than Vanderbilt does. (I know nothing about Emory, and I’m just passing on what someone else has posted.)

Vanderbilt students tend to be more gregarious and the school has a much stronger campus community and school spirit compared to Emory.

OK, I’m from California, so obviously I can only speak about what I hear out here, but Vanderbilt beats Emory hands down on just an overall feeling. Vanderbilt not only has a great reputation, it has Division 1 sports, a great sense of school spirit, full professors teaching classes, a beautiful, natural campus which, remarkably, is located in the middle of Nashville. And if you are a music lover, you’ve got to be amazed that the center of the recording industry is just blocks away from the school. Plus, this from friends going there–it takes unbelievable care of its students. Really—people are very well treated there: great housing, food, free shuttles to the airports, taxi rides, local restaurants as one option on the meal plan…No wonder people at Vanderbilt always look happy! (well, except around exam time, I imagine…)

yay =) I applied to Vandy.

Great housing? Are you sure you go to Vanderbilt?

Vandy has Division 1 athletics and is preppy. Emory has a large (approx. 35%) Jewish population, which may or may not be of importance to you. Both are outstanding schools with great academics and attractive campuses. Both are giving out lots of merit awards. Vandy is aggressively recruiting minority students. Two of the top pre-med schools in the country. If you visit, you will know which is the better match for you.

Vanderbilt just finished the Freshmen Commons. The dorms are all brand-new and Peabody Campus is beautiful.

freshman commons? so what about everyone else?

Just finished is the key word here. There is a general dislike for the commons on campus right now since its construction has led to winter break of only 2.5 weeks (construction caused school to start later than usual and thus all breaks are shorter). The commons will only be open for freshman starting next year not to mention it is about a 10-15 minute walk from the campus. That means current freshman will be living in the same ****hole that is Branscomb, Kissam, Vandy-Barnard. Enjoy your new dorms next year if you decide to come but do not be misled by that propaganda crap.

departed, its a non-issue for prospective students since they will be in the nice dorms.

Also, the other dorms are not as bad as you make them out to be. I lived in Vandy-Barnard freshmen year and thought the furnishes were nice – and laundry/munchie mart in the building was very convenient.

Once the Commons is open, I think there will be major renovations on upper class dorms since the old freshman dorms will be vacant. It may take several years to do it as they should have the ability to close down a certain number of “empty” dorms each year

I don’t think there will be empty dorms because next years sophomores will be living in what had been the freshman housing (since sophs used to live on peabody, which is now the commons). The next phase of housing will probably be when they rebuild Kissam quad (much needed!)

so i’m actually in the commons right now and it is incredible

i transferred from ga tech and the dorms there were literally 1/2 the size

vanderbilt has a certain panache that you can’t put your finger on; the style here is perhaps not old like the ivies but better, there’s modern art in the halls and commons, as well as an older gallery. i mean, i saw edward albee speak last month. you can’t ask for much more than that.
