My school only allows me to have two leadership roles and I’m trying to choose between being varsity soccer captain and varsity tennis captain as one of them. Which one would be better in my application?
They will be viewed as the same.
Well…that’s two…so what is the problem?
Unless you are a recruitable athlete in one of the two sports (in which case I’d choose to be captain of that sport), it makes zero difference. I’d decide based on which teammates, coach, season, etc. you prefer.
Don’t pick activities for college apps. Pick them for yourself, what would you enjoy best and which you’d make an impact.
Varsity soccer captain might be better as you are leading a larger group in the most popular sport in the world.
I played both and much prefer tennis, but I do not see the need for leadership as a student-athlete for tennis, while soccer does benefit from an on-the-field general. (I was a multiple athlete in high school & captain of two teams–one of which was primarily individual competitions. As captain of the wrestling team, my duties and responsibilities were negligible outside of the daily practices–which were brutal and now illegal in most states (actually was illegal then, but private schools were exempted from state regulations), but as captain of the soccer team I was expected to lead practices and, as center-fielder, was expected to be a leader on the field during competitions.)
Captaincy does not make any difference whatsoever if you are a recruitable tennis player, but may have some impact if being recruited as a soccer player.
Which sport do you enjoy more? Is a stronger team? Less problematic in leading? One person indicated soccer is more team oriented and tennis really more individual. But I’d choose the sport I would enjoy the experience more.
