Vassar, Brown, or USC

hi everybody!! i am currently a freshman finishing up their first year at vassar!! i’ve had such a great opportunity meeting people and i’ve met some wonderful life-long friends. however, i am slightly conflicted about whether or not i want to stay at vassar.

i am majoring in media studies and i know that i am interested in the modern, digital, social media scope of studies. i would say i’m more towards the marketing side of media studies and i love graphic designing.

recently, i’ve been thinking about whether or not vassar is the best school for media studies. i’ve met with the media studies board and i hate to say that i’m a little worried about whether or not the media department here satisfies me. originally i wanted to go to brown, but i got deferred and ended up being rejected. however, one of my friends recently got into brown and now my curiosity has came back.

i was wondering if anyone could speak on the media departments of both brown and vassar? employment, alumni connections, etc!

on the other side of my mind is the topic of the university of southern california. i’ve always wanted to go to california and i also originally thought that id go for college. i know that usc has a very strong communications/media department so im wondering if it’s worth considering? i am a little worried about the size of the campus since im coming from a tiny liberal arts campus. however, i also am looking for a bigger school, but im not sure if usc will be too big?

i also thought maybe i should stick with vassar for my undergrad and return to usc and brown for my graduate education?

any help or input would be greatly appreciated!! thank you so much

If you are happy at Vassar, perhaps you could see the education there as foundational, and do grad work that is more career focused. Grad school may depend on finances of course. Media studies can, I am assuming, be more liberal arts or more practical/career oriented. Not sure Brown would be that different from Vassar in that regard, but I could be wrong. Other schools that might interest you: Emerson, Clark, Columbia College Chicago, BU. probably many more. But without knowing you or much about your situation, and since you suggested it yourself, it seems reasonable and even wise to stay where you are. Perhaps you can do more practical projects outside of class, or during the summer.

Are you talking about potentially applying to transfer in Fall 2025?

If so all you can do is put in apps and see what options you may have at that point. If you are certain you want to have transfer options, you would have to apply to some less selective schools than Brown and USC as well. Will you be applying for financial aid as a transfer?

What are your career goals?
